A method for detecting net relative motion between a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tool and a specimen includes disposing the NMR tool and the specimen in sensory range of one another, causing the NMR tool to make NMR measurements of the specimen, and processing the NMR measurements to detect net relative motion between the NMR tool and the specimen.

Motion detection while drilling

A method can include accessing a measurement model in memory of a downhole tool; determining an optimal parameter set using a processor of the downhole tool and the measurement model; and performing at least one measurement using at least one sensor of the downhole tool operated according to the optimal parameter set.

Adaptive downhole acquisition system

A method can include performing an operation using a system where the operation depends on a decision made via a digital decision model stored in memory of the system; responsive to a decision state of the digital decision model, transmitting a request to update the digital decision model; and responsive to the request, receiving an updated digital decision model, where the updated digital decision model includes at least one new decision state that improves performance of the operation of the system.

Elastic adaptive downhole acquisition system

Downhole properties of a geological formation may be determined using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements obtained by a moving tool. To do so, an interpretation of the NMR data obtained by the moving data may take into account a moving model, characterization, or calibration of the downhole NMR tool. Additionally or alternatively, a partial interpretation mask may exclude interpretation of certain areas of data (e.g., T1-T2 data points or diffusion-T2 data points) that are expected to be less likely to describe downhole materials of interest.

Fast measurement and interpretation of downhole multi-dimensional measurement

An NMR well logging tool is provided that includes a sensor and associated electronic circuitry. The sensor includes an array of RF antenna elements. The electronic circuitry includes at least one low-power integrated circuit and a plurality of high-power modules corresponding the RF antenna elements of the array. Each high-power module is coupled to a corresponding RF antenna element of the array and includes an RF amplifier that is configured to amplify RF pulses generated by the at least one low-power integrated circuit and supplied thereto for transmission by the corresponding antenna element. In embodiments, the RF amplifier of each high-power module can include an H-bridge circuit or other suitable RF amplifier.

Miniaturized NMR tool electronics

A system for drilling a borehole is disclosed. The system may include drill string having a bottom hole assembly a nuclear magnetic resonance tool within the bottom hole assembly, and a surface control system including a nuclear magnetic resonance measurement quality map. The control system may be configured to drill a borehole at a first set of drilling parameters and to receive motion properties from the nuclear magnetic resonance tool and adjust the drilling of the bore hole at a second set of drilling parameters. The surface control system may be further configured to adjust the drilling of the bore hole based on the motion properties from the nuclear magnetic resonance tool and the nuclear magnetic resonance measurement quality map.

Estimating nuclear magnetic resonance measurement quality

Apparatus and methods are provided for finding indications of at least one of a water fraction, a hydrocarbon fraction, water conductivity, and water salinity of a fluid. The fluid is within a flow line that extends through a resonator. The flow line is subjected to microwaves at multiple microwave frequencies injected into the resonator, with electric field lines parallel to the fluid flow line. A power detector is used at an output of the resonator, and a peak power and associated resonance frequency are used to find the indication(s) which may be plotted and displayed. In one embodiment, the resonator is a dual loop-gap resonator, and the microwave frequencies are generated by a microwave sweeper source at approximately 1 GHz.

Microwave measurement of water fraction

A method for measuring one or more properties of a formation includes applying a magnetic field to a subterranean formation using a downhole tool. A radiofrequency signal is transmitted into the subterranean formation that is exposed to the magnetic field. The radiofrequency signal induces a transverse magnetization in the subterranean formation, and the transverse magnetization induces an initial voltage signal in the downhole tool. The initial voltage signal is amplified using a first amplifier in the downhole tool such that the first amplifier outputs a first amplified voltage signal. The first amplified voltage signal is introduced to an input of the first amplifier, such that the first amplifier amplifies the first amplified voltage signal and outputs a second amplified voltage signal.

Active damping for NMR logging tools

An apparatus for measuring nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) properties of subsurface formations includes a magnet for pre-polarizing nuclear spins in the formations. A plurality of transmitter antennas is spaced apart along a length of the apparatus. The apparatus includes at least one of a receiver circuit selectively coupled to at least one of the plurality of transmitter antennas and a separate receiver antenna. The apparatus includes circuitry for applying radio frequency current pulses selectively to each of the plurality of transmitter antennas such that during a NMR measurement sequence while the apparatus is moving substantially only those of the plurality of transmitter antennas having radio frequency current pulses applied thereto are disposed longitudinally along a same region of interest in the subsurface formations.

NMR well logging instrument and method with synthetic apertures

A coaxial nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probe and related methods are described herein. The coaxial NMR probe includes a housing with a fluid inlet, a fluid outlet, a longitudinal axis, and an interior volume. The housing contains a fluid sample that is analyzed by the probe. The coaxial NMR probe also includes an elongated conductor disposed along the longitudinal axis of the housing. The elongated conductor generates an oscillating electromagnetic field within the interior volume of the housing. The oscillating electromagnetic field produces a NMR signal within the fluid sample. The elongated conductor may also be used to receive this NMR signal. The NMR signal is then analyzed to determine information about the fluid sample. Various NMR pulse sequences for use with this coaxial probe and other coaxial probes are also described herein.

NMR probe and methods of use

Systems and methods for generating a multi-dimensional distribution function. First data and second data may be received in response to one or more radiofrequency pulses that are transmitted into a subterranean formation. The first data may include Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill data, and the second data may include diffusion editing data with initial echo spacings longer than subsequent echo spacings. The second data may be inverted. A multi-dimensional distribution function may be determined using the inverted second data.

Identifying and removing artifacts from multi-dimensional distribution functions

Methods and systems are provided for tools having non-resonant circuits for analyzing a formation and/or a sample. For example, nuclear magnetic resonance and resistivity tools can make use of a non-resonant excitation coil and/or a detection coil. These coils can achieve desired frequencies by the use of switches, thereby removing the requirement of tuning circuits that are typical in conventional tools.

Non-resonant logging tools

A method for correcting motion-effects from a downhole measurement includes, in one embodiment, determining relative motion of a downhole logging tool for a given logging operation in a borehole formed in an earth formation, determining a motion induced signal decay (MID) based upon the determined relative motion, determining a motion-effect inversion kernel (MEK) based upon the determined MID, using the downhole logging tool to acquire measurements that are affected by motion of the downhole logging tool during the logging operation, and using the MEK to process the acquired motion-affected measurements to obtain motion-corrected data. Corresponding systems, devices, and apparatuses are also disclosed herein.

Correction of motion effect in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging

Systems and methods are provided for investigating a downhole formation using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tool having two or more radio frequency receiving coils. While the tool is moving through the borehole, the formation is magnetized and resulting signals are obtained. In accordance with the present approach, the acquired signals can be resolved azimuthally and can be reconstructed to obtain an indication of a parameter of the formation at multiple locations along the length of the borehole.

Imaging subterranean formations and features using multicoil NMR measurements

A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system includes a transmitter of an NMR tool to output a magnetic field pulse into a zone of interest, a receiver of the NMR tool to output an NMR echo data set produced from an interaction of the magnetic field pulse and the zone of interest, and an NMR echo processing module including a filter matched to a response of the NMR tool to output a filtered NMR echo data set from the NMR echo data set, wherein the filter is matched to an echo shape of the NMR echo data, is matched to an average of a selected signal spectra of the NMR echo data set, or dynamically changes in response to a measurement.
