X-ray tube construction comprising a housing with a metal tube envelope therein and a shaft. An anode plate is carried by the shaft. Bearings are disposed on opposite sides of the anode plate and rotatably mount the shaft in the envelope. A motor drive is coupled to the shaft for rotating the shaft and the anode plate carried thereby. A cathode is provided for supplying electrons which are accelerated by a high voltage to the anode plate for creating x-rays upon impingement with the anode plate. A heat cage is disposed in the housing and the envelope and surrounds the anode plate. X-ray shielding is disposed within the housing between the envelope and the housing. Windows are provided in the shielding, the metal envelope and in the heat cage to permit x-rays to pass therethrough. Particularly novel means is provided for dissipating the heat generated in the anode and for dissipating the same exterior of the housing prior to the heat passing to the opposite extremities of the shaft. Shaft constructions have been utilized which inhibit the travel of heat to the opposite ends of the shafts and thereby serving to protect the bearings rotatably supporting the shaft.

Air cooled metal ceramic x-ray tube construction

An X-ray tube including a tubular envelope having rotatably mounted therein an anode target disc provided with an annular focal track made of X-ray emissive material having an atomic number greater than forty and coated with a heat absorbent layer having a thickness in the range of 2 to 50 micrometers and made of an elemental or a compound material, comprising one or more elements having respective atomic numbers no greater than thirty.

In an x-ray source having a cathode emitting electron beams (15, 16) bombarding inner surfaces of an inverted conical anode target cooled by flowing water on its exterior, providing in place of the apex (14b) of the conical anode (34) a rearwardly facing upstream cylindrical extension (34b) which insures against apex tip burn-out by extending the cooling structure, area and mass to an upstream position to further dissipate heat energy flux generated by impingement of the electron beam. Portions functioning to effectively cool the anode target extend into non-beam illuminating regions of the target anode.

An X-ray tube including a tubular envelope having therein an X-ray target comprised of a support body made of a first material and provided with a composite surface layer comprising a controlled gradient of a second material disposed in the first material, one of the materials being an X-ray emissive material and the other of the materials being a heat absorbent material, and an electron emitting cathode disposed to beam electrons onto a focal spot area of the composite surface layer.

Gradated target for X-ray tubes

An X-ray generator which produces a beam of parallel substantially non-spreading radiation, the generator including a housing containing a tube having an envelope containing an X-ray generating target and an X-ray transmissive window, the target having a focal spot from which the useful X-rays are emitted which is located at the side of the tube remote from the window, and aperture means in the path of the beam either within the envelope or adjacent the housing for collimating the beam and shaping it to the desired cross-sectional configuration and for restricting beam divergence.

An X-ray system comprising an X-ray tube provided with a target focal spot area from which an X-ray beam emanates from the tube, an X-ray Fresnel zone plate disposed interceptingly in the path of the X-ray beam, and an image receptor disposed to receive the resulting image of the zone plate conveyed by the X-ray beam.

An x-ray tube including an evacuated envelope having therein a rotatable anode target comprised of a cup-shaped body having a sloped inner wall provided with an annular groove wherein a plurality of pinlike members form an x-ray generating focal track, the members interfitting with the groove at their upper ends and being retained in place at their lower ends by a circumferentially extending removable band or spaced retainers enabling the members to be more easily assembled and retained in place.

Rotating anode x-ray tube

An extended radiating aperture for X-rays is provided by means of a stationary target of an X-ray emissive metal positioned for uniform illumination by high speed electrons emanating from a cathode and accelerating through a difference of potential between the cathode and the target. The target is in the form of a relatively thin film which can be deposited on a substrate transparent to X-radiation. The substrate cools the target. The generator is advantageously utilized with a zone plate which provides a coding on a roentgenogram which is then decoded by an optical processor to form a visible image of an object being X-rayed. An alternative embodiment of the invention includes the use of an inclined transmissive target for enhanced monochromaticity to emitted radiation.

Broad aperture X-ray generator

An X-ray tube including an evacuated envelope having therein a rotatable anode target comprising a cup-shaped disc open toward an electron emitting cathode and having a sloped inner wall provided with an annular groove wherein a plurality of rod-like members are disposed in side-by-side relationship, the rod-like members being made of rare earth composite material to provide substantially monochromatic X-radiation when bombarded with electrons.
