A device for pulling in flat-stock pieces and precisely-aligned transporting of the flat-stock pieces at a work station of a machine for processing the flat-stock pieces has a gripper apparatus that grabs a forward edge of a piece of flat stock and accelerates the flat-stock piece, and a sheet pick-up roller that picks up the accelerated piece of flat stock from the gripper apparatus, whereby the sheet pick-up roller has a roller gripper effective at a circumference thereof for grabbing the accelerated piece of flat stock. The roller gripper can move between a closed position in which the piece of flat stock is held fast and an open position in which the piece of flat stock is released. Suction holes operable to be charged with intake air are disposed in a part of a circumference of the sheet pick-up roller following in a direction of rotation behind the roller gripper.

Apparatus and method for drawing in flat material pieces and in-register transportation of the flat material pieces

An apparatus for transporting envelope blanks in an envelope making machine comprises at least one conveyor belt having a plurality of perforation holes therein, on which envelope blanks are transported through the machine in a conveyor plane. Beneath the conveyor belt is at least one suction chamber by means of which ambient air can be sucked through the perforation holes to retain blanks on the conveyor belt. At least one guide belt is provided on at least one side beside the conveyor belt in the direction of movement thereof. Adhesive, preferably pressure sensitive adhesive, is applied to an article f manufacture, such as the closure flap of an envelope or paper bag in such a way that the adhesive is protected against activation prior to closing the article. For this purpose, the adhesive is first applied to a continuous web or tape of a carrier material that either has an inherent anti-stick characteristic or is provided with an anti-stick surface coating relative to the adhesive to be applied. Preferably, the adhesive does not cover the entire surface of the carrier strip, but rather covers only areas in the form of stripes extending at least partly across the width of the carrier web. The adhesive stripes are spaced from one another and preferably also from at least one edge of the carrier web or tape. The carrier web is then severed into strips, each provided with one adhesive stripe and these strips with the adhesive stripes thereon are then secured between two rollers to the surface area to be provided with the adhesive. The web material forms a substrate or backing for each individual adhesive stripe. The backing is then removed when the article is to be closed. The apparatus for this purpose is provided with a feed advance for the tape or web, with an adhesive applicator and with a cutter that preferably also functions as a strip applicator.

According to the main feature of the apparatus, an article-supporting slideway is provided and lateral toothed belts run around reversing sprockets and are provided with article-engaging entraining members, the rotational axes of the reversing sprockets being perpendicular to the plane of the slideway.

A device for controlling the vacuum at a rotating vacuum cylinder in a high peed paper converting machine by means of a control head having a conical shape which is supported coaxially therewith and which is secured against rotation. The conically shaped control head is telescoped into a complementarily shaped opening in the vacuum cylinder with an exact fit. The two cooperating control surfaces lie on the outer cone surface of the control head and on the inner cone surface of the vacuum cylinder.

A noise suppression device is provided for a vacuum cylinder having a conl head which is used in high speed paper converting machines and which includes a sound attenuator which is integral with the vacuum cylinder. The sound attenuator incorporates a plurality of attenuation chambers within the vacuum cylinder which are interconnected by tubes arranged in an offset manner to overlap each other in the projection. Air passages are also provided in the side of the vacuum cylinder opposite the control head to connect the last attenuation chamber to the atmosphere.

According to the invention, separator plates bevelled at the front edges provided on the rotating feed segments of a sheet feeder, more particularly for envelope machines, which finally separate from the pile of blanks a blank for feeding, the front edge of the bottom flap of the blank having been separated from the pile by means of a tongue and vacuum device. The separator plates align the blank in the direction of conveyance, smooth it out, and then feed it to the extractor roller and engagement edge of the rotating feed segments.
