A solid electrolytic capacitor comprising a capacitor element, anode lead extending from a surface of the capacitor element, an anode termination that is in electrical connection with the anode lead, a cathode termination that is in electrical connection with the solid electrolyte, and a casing material that encapsulates the capacitor element and anode lead is provided. An interfacial coating is disposed on at least a portion of the anode termination and/or cathode termination and is in contact with the casing material. The coating contains a hydrophobic resinous material and the adhesion strength of the casing material is about 5 newtons per square millimeter or more as determined at a temperature of about 23° C. and relative humidity of about 30%.

Delamination-resistant solid electrolytic capacitor

A capacitor that comprises a capacitor element that includes an anode that contains a dielectric formed on a sintered porous body, a solid electrolyte overlying the anode that contains manganese dioxide, and a cathode coating is provided. The cathode coating includes a barrier layer overlying the solid electrolyte and a metallization layer overlying the barrier layer. The barrier layer contains a valve metal and the metallization layer contains a metal that exhibits an electrical resistivity of about 150 n&#x3a9;&#xb7;m or less (at a temperature of 20&#xb0; C.) and an electric potential of about &#x2212;0.5 V or more.

Solid electrolytic capacitor for use at high temperatures

A capacitor assembly that comprises a solid electrolytic capacitor element is provided. The capacitor assembly also comprises a casing material that encapsulates the capacitor element, an anode termination that is in electrical connection with the anode body and contains a portion that is positioned external to the casing material, and a cathode termination that is in electrical connection with the solid electrolyte and contains a portion that is positioned external to the casing material. A first hydrophobic coating is disposed in contact with the casing material and the external portion of the anode termination and a second hydrophobic coating is disposed in contact with the casing material and the external portion of the cathode termination.

Solid electrolytic capacitor assembly with hydrophobic coatings

A capacitor assembly that is capable of performing under extreme conditions, such as at high temperatures and/or high voltages, is provided. The ability to perform at high temperature is achieved in part by enclosing and hermetically sealing the capacitor element within a housing in the presence of a gaseous atmosphere that contains an inert gas, thereby limiting the amount of oxygen and moisture supplied to the solid electrolyte of the capacitor element. Furthermore, the present inventors have also discovered that the ability to perform at high voltages can be achieved through a unique and controlled combination of features relating to the formation of the anode, dielectric, and solid electrolyte. For example, the solid electrolyte is formed from a combination of a conductive polymer and a hydroxy-functional nonionic polymer.

Solid electrolytic capacitor for use in extreme conditions

A capacitor that comprises a capacitor element that includes an anode that contains a dielectric formed on a sintered porous body, a solid electrolyte overlying the anode, and a cathode coating is provided. The cathode coating includes a noble metal layer (e.g., gold) overlying the solid electrolyte and a layer overlying the noble metal layer that includes sintered metal particles (e.g., silver particles).

A capacitor whose electrical properties can be stable under a variety of different conditions is provided. The solid electrolyte of the capacitor is formed from a combination of an in situ polymerized conductive polymer and a hydroxy-functional nonionic polymer. One benefit of such an in situ polymerized conductive polymer is that it does not require the use of polymeric counterions (e.g., polystyrenesulfonic anion) to compensate for charge, as with conventional particle dispersions, which tend to result in ionic polarization and instable electrical properties, particularly at the low temperatures noted above. Further, it is believed that hydroxy-functional nonionic polymers can improve the degree of contact between the polymer and the surface of the internal dielectric, which unexpectedly increases the capacitance performance and reduces ESR.

Temperature stable solid electrolytic capacitor

A capacitor assembly for use in ultrahigh voltage environments is provided. To help achieve good performance at such high voltages, a variety of aspects of the assembly are controlled in the present invention, including the number of capacitor elements, the manner in which the capacitor elements are arranged and incorporated into the assembly, and the manner in which the capacitor elements are formed. For example, the capacitor assembly contains an anode termination to which the anode lead of a first capacitor element is electrically connected and a cathode termination to which the cathode of a second capacitor element is electrically connected. To help improve the breakdown voltage properties of the assembly, the capacitor elements are electrically connected in series such that the anode lead of the second capacitor element is also electrically connected to the cathode of the first capacitor element via a conductive member.

Ultrahigh voltage capacitor assembly

A solid electrolytic capacitor that comprises a sintered porous anode, a dielectric layer that overlies the anode body, and a solid electrolyte overlying the dielectric layer is provided. The anode is formed from a finely divided powder (e.g., nodular or angular) having a relatively high specific charge. Despite the use of such high specific charge powders, high voltages can be achieved through a combination of features relating to the formation of the anode and solid electrolyte. For example, relatively high press densities and sintering temperatures may be employed to achieve 'sinter necks' between adjacent agglomerated particles that are relatively large in size, which render the dielectric layer in the vicinity of the neck less susceptible to failure at high forming voltages.

Solid electrolytic capacitor with improved performance at high voltages

A capacitor assembly configured to effectively dissipate heat when exposed to a high ripple current is provided. The assembly includes a plurality of capacitor elements, each including an anode body and lead, a dielectric layer overlying the anode body, and a solid electrolyte. Each capacitor element is defined by upper and lower major surfaces, first opposing minor surfaces, and second opposing minor surfaces. The major surfaces each have a surface area greater than that of each of the minor opposing surfaces. A hermetically sealed housing having a length, width, and height defines an interior cavity within which the plurality of capacitor elements are positioned. The ratio of the length to the height ranges from about 2 to about 80. Further, the lower major face of each capacitor element faces a lower wall of the housing, where the lower wall is defined by the housing's length and width.

Low profile multi-anode assembly

A capacitor assembly for use in high voltage and high temperature environments is provided. More particularly, the capacitor assembly includes a capacitor element containing an anodically oxidized porous, sintered body that is coated with a manganese oxide solid electrolyte. To help facilitate the use of the capacitor assembly in high voltage (e.g., above about 35 volts) and high temperature (e.g., above about 175&#xb0; C.) applications, the capacitor element is enclosed and hermetically sealed within a housing in the presence of a gaseous atmosphere that contains an inert gas. It is believed that the housing and inert gas atmosphere are capable of limiting the amount of moisture supplied to the manganese dioxide. In this manner, the solid electrolyte is less likely to undergo an adverse reaction under extreme conditions, thus increasing the thermal stability of the capacitor assembly. In addition to functioning well in both high voltage and high temperature environments, the capacitor assembly of the present invention may also exhibit a high volumetric efficiency.

Manganese oxide capacitor for use in extreme environments

A capacitor assembly that comprises a housing, a capacitor element that is hermetically sealed within the housing, and a thermally conductive material that at least partially encapsulates the capacitor element is provided. The capacitor element includes a sintered anode body, a dielectric overlying the anode body, and a solid electrolyte overlying the dielectric. The thermally conductive material has a thermal conductivity of about 1 W/m-K or more as determined in accordance with ISO 22007-2:2014.

Thermally conductive encapsulant material for a capacitor assembly

A solid electrolytic capacitor that contains an anode body, dielectric overlying the anode body, adhesion coating overlying the dielectric, and solid electrolyte overlying the adhesion coating. The solid electrolyte contains an inner conductive polymer layer and outer conductive polymer layer, at least one of which is formed from a plurality of pre-polymerized conductive polymer particles. Furthermore, the adhesion coating contains a discontinuous precoat layer containing a plurality of discrete nanoprojections of a manganese oxide (e.g., manganese dioxide).

A metal cylindrical housing having a lid and base, where the lid has a diameter in an &#x2212;x direction and the metal cylindrical housing has a height in a &#x2212;z direction, defines an interior cavity within which the plurality of capacitor elements are arranged about a central axis running along the &#x2212;z direction. The ratio of the diameter to the height of the base ranges from about 1.5 to about 20. Further, the metal cylindrical housing is hermetically sealed.

A solid electrolytic capacitor that comprises a sintered porous anode, a dielectric layer that overlies the anode body, and a solid electrolyte overlying the dielectric layer is provided. The solid electrolyte comprises a conductive polymer and a nonionic surfactant having a hydrophilic/lipophilic balance ('HLB') of from about 10 to about 20 and a molecular weight of from about 100 to about 10,000 grams per mole.
