This invention relates to lead free and cadmium free copper-containing glass frits that can be used as pigments to color other glass frits or to impart color to solid substrates such as glass, ceramic or metals, or to impart color to a thermoplastic mass. The compositions comprise silica, alkali metal oxides, alkaline earth metal oxides, tin oxide and copper oxide. The resulting compositions can be used to decorate and protect automotive, beverage, architectural, pharmaceutical and other glass substrates, generally imparting a red color.

A self-cleaning paint coating that exhibits the LOTUS EFFECT and an agent and a method for producing the same. The paint coating comprises a paint base coat and a topcoat. The topcoat includes structure-forming particles and is at least partially hydrophobic. The structure-forming particles have an average particle diameter of less than 100 nanometers (nm) and form elevations in the topcoat surface that are interspaced at a distance of less than 50 nm. The topcoat of the paint coating is formed from the agent. The agent contains a liquid medium, a hydrophobating agent dissolved in the liquid medium, and structure-forming particles suspended in the medium. The method of forming the paint coating comprises coating a substrate with the base coat, applying the topcoat agent to the partially cured or uncured base coat, and curing of the top coat, and if required, the base coat.

Self-cleaning paint coating and a method and agent for producing the same

A plasma spray process for structuring self-cleaning glass surfaces and self-cleaning glass surfaces formed according to the process. Molten or heat softened particles of inorganic material are plasma spray deposited onto the surface of a substrate to create a micro-rough surface. If desired, a hydrophobic top coating layer can optionally be applied to the micro-rough surface. The micro-structured surface formed according to the invention is durable and self-cleaning.

Process for structuring self-cleaning glass surfaces

The present invention involves growing diatoms on a surface for the purpose of forming nanoscale-sized siliceous structures on the surface. In accordance with the invention, diatom films are grown on various substrates, which are then fired to remove all organic material from the diatoms and produce a surface coated with intricate, nanoscale-sized structures. The nanoscale-sized structured surface is subsequently treated with a hydrophobic film-forming agent to form a structured self-cleaning surface.

Structured self-cleaning surfaces and method of forming same

The present invention provides a method of forming a glass article having a transparent hydrophobic surface during a glass-forming operation. In accordance with the method, a plurality of solid particles of inorganic material having an average diameter of less than about 400 nm are applied to a surface of the glass article when the glass article is at a temperature within the range of from about 700&#xb0; C. to about 1200&#xb0; C. The inorganic particles fuse to the surface of the glass article to form the transparent hydrophobic surface. Optionally, a fluorosilane agent can be applied to the transparent hydrophobic surface to further increase its hydrophobicity. The transparent hydrophobic surface has a nano-structured texture, which makes the surface of the glass article very hydrophobic and easy to clean. In addition, application of the transparent hydrophobic surface to the glass article does not adversely affect the optical clarity of the glass article and it helps reduce the amount of incident light reflected from the surface of the glass article.

Method of micro and nano texturing glass

The invention relates to glass, ceramic and metal substrates with at least one self-cleaning surface, comprising a layer with a micro-rough surface structure which is arranged on the substrate and made at least partly hydrophobic. The layer contains a glass flux and structure-forming particles with a mean particle diameter within the 0.1 to 50 &#x3bc;m range; the glass flux and structure-forming particles are present in a volume ratio within the 0.1 to 5 range, and the micro-rough surface structure has a ratio of mean profile height to mean distance between adjacent profile tips within the 0.3 to 10 range. To produce the subject of the invention the substrate is coated with a composition containing a glass flux and structure-forming particles, and the layer is burnt in and made hydrophobic.

Glass ceramic and metal substrates with a self-cleaning surface, method for the production and use thereof

A substrate of glass, ceramic, plastic and metal, or a glazed or enamelled substrate, with a self-cleaning and/or hydrophobic surface. The substrate having disposed thereon a coating that includes a plurality of particles affixed to the surface of the substrate by a binder. The particles are preferably of nanoscale size and extend outwardly from a surface of the coating to form a nano-rough surface. The nano-rough surface causes a hydrophobic or water repellent effect. The binder can be formed from an organic or an inorganic material and operates to fix the plurality of particles to substrate surface.
