A multifunctional photonic integrated circuit (PIC) suitable for the manufacture of fiber optic gyroscopes (FOG) is described. The PIC is constructed and arranged to exhibit a scale factor of substantially high stability and accuracy. The PIC may comprise, for example, a high optical birefringence and low propagation loss waveguide, a low wavelength-dependent split-ratio Y-junction, a high extinction ratio linear polarizer, and high efficiency fiber-to-waveguide mode-size converters. Considerations for ensuring high-level FOG performance are addressed by, for example, optimization of waveguide structure, functional requirements for individual components, and combined effects of the circuit layout. A high-end, tactical grade FOG may be built using the disclosed PIC, after connecting to polarization maintaining optical fiber coil, a light source, and a photodetector.

Multiple channels may be established for accommodating various categories of data transfers, and the amount of network bandwidth allocated to each channel may be dynamically adjusted to accommodate any of numerous performance objectives.

An optical device comprises a fiber having a cladding and a core, and a target PIC waveguide having a cladding and a core. The cladding on one side of the input fiber is removed at the end of the fiber and a flat surface is created along the fiber core, close to the core, exposing the fiber core. A flat-bottomed channel having an in-plane angle with respect to the symmetric axis of the PIC waveguide is fabricated on the top layer of the PIC waveguide in the coupling area, exposing the upper surface of the tapered planar waveguide. The flat surface of the fiber and the top surface of the waveguide is contacting, so the core of the fiber is intersected at an angle with respect to the symmetric axis of the target waveguide and close together at the intersection as an interacting region to define a hybrid waveguide.

Systems and methods are disclosed for delivering programming content to vehicles (e.g., seagoing vessels) in a cost-effective manner. In some embodiments, programming content may be delivered to vehicles over previously deployed networks (e.g., satellite networks), using excess network capacity which may not otherwise be used to deliver data. By opportunistically employing excess network capacity (e.g., as the capacity becomes available), data constituting programming content may be delivered to vehicles over a period of time, such as via multicast transmission. After an item of programming content has been received, the item may be made accessible to the vehicle's crew and/or passengers, such as by streaming the item to one or more suitably configured playback devices. Content may be served to playback devices 'on demand' and/or according to a programming schedule.

The present invention provides an improved antenna system on moving platform that is in communication with multiple satellites for simultaneous reception and transmission of RF energy at multiple frequencies. A method and apparatus for performing range finding and a unique heads-up display for use in such apparatus are provided. Range finding is performed by viewing an object of known height at the location to which a range determination is being made through a transparent digital display on which a reticle is provided. The reticle is preferably in segments with the user adding or substracting segments from the reticle until its height matches that of the sighted image. A processor is provided to which the known height of the object is inputted, either by the user or from storage, with the processor determining range from this known height and the number of segments in the reticle. The range is displayed on the transparent display, permitting a user to simultaneously view both the object and the range indication.
