Systems and methods for plasma-based remediation of SOand NO

A method and system to treat emissions (e.g., smoke, particulate, odor, grease) employs a nanosecond high voltage pulse generator, a transient pulsed plasma reactor, and a DC voltage source that supplies a DC bias voltage, preferably a negative DC bias voltage to a conductor of the transient pulsed plasma reactor. The system is used in a scheme that substantially reduces at least particulate matter in emissions streams, for example emissions streams produced during cooking, for instance in commercial charbroiling processes (e.g., cooking of hamburger meat), or from operation of internal combustion engines. Both a reduction in the size distribution and total particulate mass is achieved using the method and system described herein.

Method and system for treating emissions using a transient pulsed plasma

A method and system to treat cooking emissions (e.g., smoke) employs a nanosecond high voltage pulse generator and a transient pulsed plasma reactor. The system is used in a scheme that substantially reduces particulate matter produced in commercial charbroiling processes (e.g., cooking of hamburger meat). A system and method for providing multiple fast rising pulses to improve performance efficiency. In one approach, multiple fast rising pulse power is employed to improve fuel efficiency and power of an engine. The system and method can involve a transient plasma plug assembly intended to replace a traditional spark plug. The device includes an anode coupled to receive a voltage; and a cathode disposed in proximity to the anode and coupled to a ground, wherein at least one of the anode and the cathode includes a protrusion that enhances an electric field formed between the anode and the cathode, the protrusion forming a sharp edge defining a plurality of points, each point forming a path of shortest distance between the anode and the cathode.

Electrodes for multi-point ignition using single or multiple transient plasma discharges

This invention relates to a pulse generator circuit for delivering a short high current pulse to a load. This pulse generator comprises a junction recovery diode, a switch, a first resonant circuit and a second resonant circuit. The diode may be configured to store charges in its depletion layer when there is a forward flow of a current and to rapidly switch open after the depletion layer is discharged by a reverse flow of a current. After the diode rapidly switch opens, the pulse generator may provide a reverse current to the load. This pulse generator may be configured to generate at least one pulse that is having a length of no more than 100 nanoseconds at the full-width-at-half-maximum and an amplitude of at least 1 kilovolt. Electrodes may be connected to the pulse generator to deliver one pulse or plurality of pulses to biological cells such as tumor cells.

A pulse generator circuit may include a diode configured to operate as an opening switch, a tank circuit in series with the diode having an admittance that is switchable from a first value to a second value that is different from the first value, and a switching system configured to cause the tank circuit to switch between the first value and the second value. The diode may saturate in less than 100 nanoseconds. A saturable core transformer may operate as a switch that controls the opening of the diode. The pulse generator may generate a plurality of pulses, each having a length of no more than 3 nanoseconds and an amplitude of at least 1 kilovolt. Electrodes may be connected to the pulse generator to deliver the plurality of pulses to biological cells.

High voltage nanosecond pulse generator using fast recovery diodes for cell electro-manipulation

A solid-state pulse generator using a split magnetic core transformer is described. In one embodiment, the solid-state drive circuit uses MOSFETs switching a blumlein to produce a desired input pulses in a primary winding of the split magnetic core. The pulse length is determined primarily by the characteristics of the blumlein and the split core transformer. The &ldquo;on&rdquo; time of the solid-state devices can exceed the output pulse length, thereby reducing the chance of damaging voltage spikes. The use of a split magnetic core allows several solid-state drive circuits to be used in parallel to produce a single output pulse. In one embodiment, each solid-state drive circuit drives a separate single-turn primary winding of a split magnetic core transformer. In one embodiment, each core of the split core transformer has one primary winding. The separate cores of the split core transformer are provided with a single secondary winding that couples all of the cores to produce a relatively high-voltage output pulse with relatively few turns in the secondary winding.

Apparatus and method for the treatment of pollutants in gases which includes a plasma reactor chamber having sawtooth electrodes through which said gases flow, a generator of high voltage pulses of short width, high repetition rate and rapid rise time being coupled to said reactor with matched impedance, causing pulsed streamer discharges to be initiated at said chamber electrodes, increasing the effective plasma volume for more efficient pollutant reduction.

A high-power switch network includes a laser fiber optically coupled to a network including light-initiated glow discharge switches in a Marx configuration. A low pressure gas source is used to replenish gas within the switches lost due to ionization. Each switch has a cylindrical insulating envelope with conductive end caps at each end. The end caps are electrically coupled, respectively, to a cup-shaped anode and a cup-shaped cathode. Apertures are formed centrally in closely spaced plates of the respective cup-shaped electrodes. Optical fiber cables extend through vacuum sealed ports of the switches so that the unfocused laser light is directed about the aperture of the cathode so as to close the switch, thus providing a high power output from the network.

Optically triggered back-lighted thyratron network

The invention disclosed herein includes a low pressure, light initiated, glow discharge switch for high power application. The switch is comprised of an insulating envelope formed into a cylindrical shape having conductive plates at each end. Contained within the envelope is a cathode cup and an anode cup. Each of the cups has a plate at one end which defines two central apertures. The central apertures are positioned opposite one another a short distance apart and centrally axially aligned. A quartz window at the lower end of the cathode cup defines a visual opening to allow unfocused high energy electromagnetic radiation (UV light) to be shined upon the back side of the cathode plate. When UV light is presented to the back of the cathode plate, a photoemissive mechanism is initiated which causes an avalanche effect in the gas-filled chamber of the switch which leads to the discharge of current across the gap between the anode and cathode allowing the switch to close. A system includes the electronic switch is also disclosed which may be used to trigger a high energy flash lamp or excimer laser, as well as other high power applications. A system for controlling the flow of gas into the chamber defined by the envelope of the electronic switch is also disclosed.
