This invention is a method for removing dissolved gas from a liquid. The liquid is directed into a container, and is atomized upon entry. At the same time, a relatively inert gas is also directed into the container, so as to contact the atomized droplets. The addition of the inert gas to the container alters the relative partial pressure of the dissolved gas, especially when gas of the same type has been previously removed from the interior of the container. The result is that both the dissolved gas and the inert gas tend to vent from the container. The droplets of atomized liquid settle towards the bottom of the container, to form a pool of liquid. This liquid can then be withdrawn from the container. The liquid leaving the container can also be analyzed for its dissolved gas content. If the output liquid is not sufficiently degassed, the rate of flow of inert gas into the container is increased. Increasing the flow of inert gas into the container reduces the dissolved gas content of the output liquid. It is also possible to extract residual moisture from the gas being vented from the container, and to recycle that mositure to the container.

Apparatus for removing gas from a liquid

A method and apparatus are disclosed for producing a cold gas at a desired temperature, by bubbling the gas to be cooled through a bath of cryogenic liquid. The gas to be cooled need not be the same substance as that in the bath. The gas is preferably introduced at or near the bottom of the bath, and the bubbles give up heat to the bath as they rise. The gas is introduced into the bath through a flow distributor, producing a large quantity of very small bubbles, in order to maximize the rate of heat exchange. Cold gas is extracted from the region above the liquid bath. The higher the level of the bath, the greater the time available for heat exchange between the gas and the bath. Controlling the depth of the bath therefore controls the temperature of the cold gas leaving the apparatus. The depth of the bath is primarily controlled by adjusting the rate of flow of cryogenic liquid into the bath.

Method and apparatus for producing cold gas at a desired temperature

A low pressure delivery system for cryogenic liquids is disclosed, the system being capable of providing a stream of a single-phase cryogenic liquid at a substantially constant low pressure, in the range of about 1 psi. The system comprises a container into which a cryogenic liquid, from a high pressure source, is directed. The liquid in the container is maintained at a substantially constant level by an automatic filling mechanism. The liquid does not occupy all the space within the container, the remainder of the space being filled by gas evaporating from the liquid. This gas communicates, by a suitable conduit, with a pressure regulator valve. When the gas pressure exceeds a predetermined level, the valve opens, relieving the excess pressure. By thus placing an upper bound on the gas pressure, the system places an upper bound on the pressure of the liquid withdrawn from the container. The automatic filling mechanism of the system establishes a lower bound on the liquid pressure.

Low pressure cryogenic liquid delivery system

A system for delivering cryogenic liquids at controlled low pressures is disclosed, wherein the liquid is withdrawn from the bottom of a container, and allowed to flow by gravity to the point of use. The system comprises an inlet conduit which directs a liquid cryogen into the container. The inlet conduit is connected to a float valve assembly which regulates the height of the liquid in the container. The vertical position of the float valve assembly is adjustable. The liquid cryogen is withdrawn from the bottom of the container, through an insulated outlet conduit. The pressure of the output liquid is determined by the vertical distance between the lower end of the outlet conduit and the liquid level in the container. Adjustment of the position of the float valve assembly therefore controls the output pressure. Gas bubbles that may form in the liquid tend to rise to the top of the container, so that the output is of a single phase, that is, an essentially pure liquid.
