A hydraulic motor-driven fuel boost pump includes redundant safeguards against overspeeding the impellers. A flow limiter limits the amount of hydraulic fluid that can be supplied to the hydraulic motor, thereby limiting the torque that can be applied to the impellers. A control valve also transitions between a non-restrictive operating state and a restrictive operating state. In the restrictive operating state the control valve regulates the displacement of the swash plate when in the non-restrictive operating state. The control valve does not counter the bias of the swash plate control spring when in the restrictive operating state.

Overspeed safeguards in hydraulically controlled fuel boost pump

A regenerative pump includes a housing defining a cavity having a fluid inlet arrangement and fluid outlet arrangement, and a channel having an open volume extending between the fluid inlet arrangement and the fluid outlet arrangement. A rotatable shaft extends into the housing. An impeller is mounted to the shaft within the cavity and has a plurality of vanes spaced circumferentially around the axis and opening into the channel. An arm arrangement at least partially defines walls of the channel. The arm arrangement is radially movable to vary the volume of the channel. Enlarging the volume of the channel inhibits regenerative circulatory flow during pumping and limits the pressure generated.

A fuel pump includes a cam arrangement surrounding a rotor and disposed within a spacer ring. The cam arrangement is configured to deterministically translate relative to the spacer ring and the rotor during stroking of the pump. An involute gear set provides an interface between the cam arrangement and the spacer ring. In some cases, the involute gear set is configured to provide a linear translation of the cam arrangement along a timing line. In other cases, the involute gear set is configured to provide a linear translation of the cam arrangement at an angle relative to the timing line.

A groove is applied to one or more contact surfaces of a journal bearing of a pump to increase a force applied to the contact surface(s). Each groove has an end exposed to discharge pressure of the pump so that the groove communicates the discharge pressure across the contact surface. The groove reduces an area of the contact surface over which fluid leakage results in a pressure differential, thereby increasing a net force applied to the contact surface. Applying the groove to the axial end face of the journal bearing enhances an axial force applied to the journal bearing whereas applying the groove to a radially facing land reduces friction between the journal bearing and the outer housing.

A multi-stage regenerative rotary pump assembly includes a housing, and an elongated shaft received in the housing for rotation about a rotational axis. The shaft has a longitudinal axis aligned with the rotational axis. A rotary member is operatively connected to the shaft and dimensioned for receipt in the housing. The rotary member has opposite, first and second faces axially spaced from one another in a direction of the longitudinal axis. At least the first face of the rotary member includes a first pump stage having a first stage inlet and a first stage outlet in fluid communication therewith. At least the first face includes a second pump stage having a second stage inlet and a second stage outlet in fluid communication therewith, and the second stage inlet is configured to be in fluid communication with the first stage outlet.

The regenerative pumping element is selectable between a first state in which the disc does not rotate with the impeller and a second state in which the disc rotates with the impeller.

An engine fuel or pump system includes a centrifugal pump having an impeller for imparting energy to an associated fluid for an associated downstream engine fuel system. A regenerative start stage is in selective fluid communication with the pump. And ejector includes an inlet that communicates with the pump outlet and an outlet that communicates with the pump inlet. Further, a regulator valve is interposed between the pump outlet and the regenerative start stage that selectively regulates associated flow from the regenerative start stage. The associated method include directing flow from the centrifugal pump to a regenerative start stage in order to supply an associated downstream flow circuit. During low speed starting, a portion of the flow from the regenerative start stage is provided to an ejector that recirculates to an inlet of the centrifugal pump. Once the centrifugal pump provides a predetermined level of at least one of the flow and pressure requirements of the associated flow circuit, the method includes terminating flow from the regenerative start stage.

A filter for a fluid system is designed to capture and retain large debris. The filter includes a structure that captures the debris, and due to the design, configuration, or conformation of the structure, the structure makes it difficult for the captured debris to break loose and thereby prevents repeated impact of the debris with a filter surface. Different embodiments form regions of reduced turbulence such as an angled annular wall, angled wall, or baffles, or a contoured basket in an inlet region that captures large debris, and retains the debris in the structure of the filter.

A pump assembly includes a pump unit having a centrifugal pump and a variable pump supplying pressurized flow. A fuel control assembly receives flow from the pump unit and includes at least one metering valve and at least one throttling valve. A control for the variable pump receives first and second pressure signals indicative of a pressure differential across the throttling valve, or across the metering valve/throttling valve combination, for altering operation of the variable pump in response to the pressure differential.

An integrated pressure plate and port plate, and method of forming same, for a pump includes a housing having a pumping chamber formed therein. The housing includes first and second metal pressure plate portions that form at least a portion of the pumping chamber wherein at least one of the first and second pressure plate portions has a hard coating formed of a different material than a remainder of the housing metal on a surface thereof where integrated ports are formed on surface(s) of the pressure plate portion(s). Surface irregularities relieve stresses and promote adhesion of the coating (e.g., tungsten carbide) to the underlying metal (aluminum alloy).

A multi-stage centrifugal pump assembly allows for multiple fixed ratio pressure levels. The multiple pressure levels permit optimization of actuation loops without the need for pressure regulators, and can be used directly by the actuators.

A fuel system includes a pump unit having at least a fixed displacement pump supplying pressurized flow. A fuel control assembly receives flow from the pump unit and includes at least one metering valve and at least one throttling valve. A control (bypass valve control) for the fixed displacement pump receives first and second pressure signals indicative of a pressure differential across the throttling valve, or across the metering valve/throttling valve combination, for altering output from the fixed displacement pump in response to the pressure differential. In other embodiments, the pump unit includes a centrifugal pump and a fixed displacement pump that can be fully or partially redundant depending on sizing of the pumps, and the system requirements.

A freely rotating cam ring is supported by a journal bearing. A relatively low sliding velocity is imposed between the cam ring and the vanes). This permits the use of less expensive and less brittle materials in the pump by allowing the pump to operate at much higher speeds without concern for exceeding vane tip velocity limits.
