A composition and a method of producing a composition which simulates hydration, cleansing and other properties of native vernix. The composition contains, in one embodiment, hydrated synthetic cells in a lipid matrix to provide properties which are substantially similar to those of native vernix, and may also contain proteins. In one embodiment, the composition contains water-in-oil emulsified particles providing water vapor transport and evaporative water loss properties simulating native vernix. In one embodiment, the composition contains cubosomes/water with up to 30% protein and about 5% lipid to about 30% lipid. The composition may be used to cleanse newborn skin, compromised skin surfaces, as well as normal skin, to provide hydration/barrier function, and other applications.

Simulated vernix compositions for skin cleansing and other applications

A composition and a method of producing a composition which simulates hydration, cleansing and other properties of native vernix. The composition contains hydrated synthetic cells in a lipid matrix to provide rheological properties which are substantially similar to those of native vernix, and may also contain proteins. This invention is an improved mild personal cleansing syndet bar comprising: long chain synthetic surfactant having essentially saturated C.sub.15 -C.sub.22, preferably C.sub.16 -C.sub.18, alkyl or acyl chains, more preferably cetearyl sulfate; a high lathering, mild synthetic surfactant, preferably C.sub.12 -C.sub.14 acyl isethionate; soap; fatty acids; sodium isethionate; paraffin wax, preferably a high melting point paraffin wax, and optionally, but preferably, cationic polymer. A mild skin cleansing composition in the form of a bar comprising from about 0.5% to about 20% of a mixture of a silicone gum and a silicone fluid wherein the gum:fluid ratio is from about 10:1 to about 1:10, preferably from about 4:1 to about 1:4, most preferably from about 3:2 to about 2:3. The silicone component is a skin mildness/moisturizing aid which imparts superior, durable conditioning to skin washed with the composition. Disclosed is a mild skin cleansing soap bar composition comprising: (1) 50-90% soap, and (2) a hydrated cationic polymeric skin conditioner. The physical composition of the bar is such that the hydrated polymer is substantially uniformly distributed and well incorporated in the soap. The hydrated cationic polymer improves the mildness of the soap bar to a level approaching that of bars made with very mild synthetic surfactants, while maintaining the desirable physical characteristics of a pure soap bar without the polymer. The preferred polymer is a hydrated cationic guar gum having a typical aqueous viscosity at 1% of from about 125 cps to about 3500.+-.500 cps.
