Disclosed are cathodes comprising a conductive support substrate having a catalyst coating containing nickel phosphide nanoparticles. The conductive support substrate is capable of incorporating a material to be reduced, such as COor CO. Also disclosed are electrochemical methods for generating hydrocarbon and/or carbohydrate products from COor CO using water as a source of hydrogen.

Nickel phosphide catalysts for direct electrochemical COreduction to hydrocarbons

Disclosed are cathodes comprising a conductive support substrate having a catalyst coating including NiPnanocrystals. The conductive support substrate is capable of incorporating a material to be reduced, such as water or hydrogen cations. Also disclosed are methods for generating hydrogen gas from water via an electrolysis reaction or from the reduction of hydrogen cations, wherein the catalyst is part of a conductive support within a cathode, including (a) placing an anode and the inventive cathode in an electrolyte, (b) placing the anode and cathode in conductive contact with an external source of electricity, (c) providing a source of water to the cathode, and (d) using the external source of electricity to drive an electrolysis reaction at the cathode, whereby the hydrogen gas is generated from water. In certain embodiments, the reaction uses a free catalyst, wherein the catalyst is placed in proximity to the cathode.

Nickel phosphides electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions

A catalyst for the electrolysis of water molecules and hydrocarbons, the catalyst including catalytic groups comprising ABB'Ospinels having a cubical MOcore, wherein A is Li or Na, B and B&#x2032; are independently any transition metal or main group metal, M is B, B&#x2032;, or both, x is a number from 0 to 1, and y is a number from 0 to 2. In photo-electrolytic applications, a plurality of catalytic groups are supported on a conductive support substrate capable of incorporating water molecules. At least some of the catalytic groups, supported by the support substrate, are able to catalytically interact with water molecules incorporated into the support substrate. The catalyst can also be used as part of a photo-electrochemical cell for the generation of electrical energy.

Low temperature proton conducting oxide devices

New solid state pH and sodium ion sensitive metal-oxide-type compositions, sensors and methods are disclosed. Performance thereof was demonstrated at ambient temperature with single crystals of several molybdenum bronzes (i.e. Na.sub.0.9 Mo.sub.6 O.sub.17, Li.sub.0.9 Mo.sub.6 O.sub.17, Li.sub.0.33 MoO.sub.3 and K.sub.0.3 MoO.sub.3) The pH sensors with Na-molybdenum-oxide bronzes show near ideal Nernstian behavior in the pH range 3-9. The response is not affected by the direction of the pH change.
