The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for controlling a number of user equipments operating in a cellular network. The method comprises receiving an indication that a rise-over-thermal (RoT) measured in a cell is above a threshold. In response to reception of the indication, it is determined () if a user equipment, which is in a Radio Resource Control, RRC, state CELL_DCH and served by the cell, has a low data activity in the uplink According to the method, a user equipment, which is in the RRC state CELL_DCH, is served by the cell and is determined to have a low data activity in the uplink, is triggered () to change state to a RRC state CELL_FACH. Thereby the contribution of the user equipment to the RoT of the cell may be reduced and it may be possible to avoid dropping users due to congestion control in case of unacceptably high RoT in the cell.

Method and apparatus for user equipment control in a cellular network

In methods and devices for providing a guaranteed quality of service to a subscriber of a service in a cellular radio system, a start position and an end position are received along with a required quality of service, QoS. Cell site positions are associated with possible user geographical/street paths that will take the subscriber from the start position to the end position and search for paths that will guarantee the required QoS. Based on the search the path that best satisfies the entered input criteria is selected and output to the subscriber.

Methods and devices for providing guaranteed quality of service

A gating scheme in a wireless communication network is tuned according to the performance of the application used. This can mean that in some situations gating is not used at all while in other occasions gating is used where the cycle length, burst length, number of preambles and offset are adjusted. The performance is monitored and the gating is increased or decreased depending on the results of the monitoring and demands of the application. Furthermore, the gating scheme adapts to the current performance and is chosen to optimize performance in terms of system capacity. The monitoring also takes into account which of the gating cycles that needs to be changed. The algorithm is self tuning/configuring meaning that it will control the gating scheme to find and keep an optimal level for the used application.

Gating control loop technique for optimizing performance in a wireless communication network

In a cellular radio system, the number of TDM users per cell is limited. The cellular radio system can be a WCDMA system and in particular a WCDMA system employing an Enhanced Uplink (EUL). Other users in the cell are scheduled using CDM scheduling.

Scheduling method

Method and arrangement in a first node, for generating a first and a second correctness target value. The generated correctness target values are used by a power control of the radio signals sent from a second node to be received by the first node. The radio signals are sent over at least a first channel and a second channel. The method comprises establishing a difference between the obtained first quality value of the first channel with a first quality target value of the first channel and generating a first correctness target value. The method also comprises the step of establishing a second difference between the obtained second quality value of the second channel with a second quality target value of the second channel and generating a second correctness target value.

Method and arrangement for separate channel power control

A method of operating a base station node () comprises obtaining an indication of degradation of a radio link connection between the base station node and the user equipment unit (UE) which is carried by the a high speed packet channel (HSDPA). In accordance with the distance indication, the transmission priority for the radio link connection is modified. Preferably the indication of degradation is a distance indication of distance of a user equipment unit () involved in the radio link connection from the base station node (). The transmission priority can be modified for one or both of downlink and uplink transmissions for the user equipment unit (UE). Channel dependent gating

A packet scheduler reduces or 'compresses' the packet transmission delay jitter or delay range where packets experience little or no scheduling delay before transmission. As a result, the number of packets that experience little or no delay is reduced. A preferred example way of compressing the packet transmission delay jitter is to reduce the transmission priority of low delay packets. Compressing the delay jitter is particularly desirable for services like VoIP that require low packet transmission delay jitter.

Compressed delay packet transmission scheduling

The invention is directed towards a method of estimating the load on a cell in a wireless network as well as to a cell load estimating device. According to the invention a 5 determination () is made of a value (R) indicative of the degree of use, by a mobile station provided in a set of mobile stations connected to a cell, of a communication link provided for this mobile station during a communication session. Based on this value an adjusted link quality value (L-ADJUST) is provided () for the mobile station, which is then used when determining the cell load.

Load estimation for a cell in a wireless network

Methods for downlink power control in wireless communication systems are provided. In response to a transmitter power change request from a mobile terminal () over a wireless connection, a base station () determines a power control parameter based on its current total transmitter power P. The power control parameter preferably relates to a maximum connection-specific transmitter power, a power step size and/or a power increase probability, and is used by the base station to distribute transmitter power pto the connection.

Power control method

Adaptive redundancy is implemented (either switched on or off) for a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) packet connection by a basic two step approach. A first step of adaptive redundancy implementation involves monitoring relevant sources or indicators to determine when the need for redundancy (e.g., redundancy coding) may arise. A second step of adaptive redundancy implementation involves the triggering of redundancy implementation events when the monitored sources reach or obtain certain threshold value(s) (threshold). The first and second steps of redundancy implementation can be repeated as needed. Scenarios of adaptive redundancy implementation include both network-initiated implementations (e.g., implementations initiated by a radio access network (RAN)) and mobile-initiated implementations (e.g., implementations initiated by a wireless station).

Selective redundancy for Voice over Internet transmissions

A radio base station includes multiple antennas associated with a cell. Multiple mobile radios are selected to receive transmissions over a shared radio channel during a predetermined time interval. Information is transmitted over the shared radio channel to multiple mobile radios in the cell during the predetermined time interval using multiple antenna beams. As a result, interference from the transmission appears as white additive Gaussian noise in time and in space in the cell. A 'flashlight effect' caused by a single beam transmission over the shared channel during a predetermined time interval that would normally detrimentally impact mobile channel quality detection is avoided. Other methods for avoiding the flashlight effect are described.

Reducing shared downlink radio channel interference by transmitting to multiple mobiles using multiple antenna beams

The beam pattern associated with a multi-beam antenna array is adjusted if a first beam of the beam pattern is overloaded. A lobe of a second beam of the beam pattern can be steered away from a main lobe of the first beam. Also, if a user is located in an area covered by a second beam which is adjacent to the first beam, a third beam of the beam pattern can be selected for effectuating communication with the user. If a user is located in an area covered by the first beam, another beam of the beam pattern can be selected for effectuating communication with the user.
