A dc accelerator system able to accelerate high currents of proton beams at high energies is provided. The accelerator system includes a dc high-voltage, high-current power supply, an evacuated ion accelerating tube, a proton ion source, a dipole analyzing magnet and a vacuum pump located in the high-voltage terminal. The high-current, high-energy dc proton beam can be directed to a number of targets depending on the applications such as boron neutron capture therapy BNCT applications, NRA applications, and silicon cleaving.

The present invention describes a method for curing polymers and polymer composites with X-rays generated by the bremsstrahlung effect, using a high power, high energy electron beam. The process generates X-rays with sufficient throughput and penetration for commercial use. The present invention employs high power, high energy electron beams to create the X-rays. The beams are typically run at energies ranging from 1 MeV to 10 MeV, preferably from 3 MeV to 10 MeV, and more preferably from 5 MeV to 7 MeV. The beams typically have powers ranging from 30 kW or higher, preferably 80 kW or higher, more preferably 100 kW of higher, and ideally at least 200 kW. Suitable polymers and polymer composites include, but are not limited to, polymeric molding materials, fiber reinforced molding materials, reactive monomer impregnated wood, similar and dissimilar materials bonded through adhesives.

Method and apparatus for wide angle beam scanning to internally irradiate hollow objects with a beam of charged particles utilizes a scanning deflection device to scan the beam within the object to be irradiated through an angle of deflection greater than 90.degree. from the axis along which the beam is received by the scanning deflection device. The object to be irradiated can be rotated about the scanning deflection device or the scanning deflection device can be rotated to circumferentially irradiate the object, and the object is translated relative to the scanning deflection device to irradiate an entire object, such as a tube, a container having a closed end or an object having a toroidal configuration, such as a pneumatic tire.

A method and system for scanning a beam of charged particles to control radiation dose distributions is implemented by deflecting the beam through a plurality of positions across a conveyor path along which an object to be irradiated is moved, and controlling the length of time the beam remains at each position in accordance with the radiation dose required at each position. The beam may be deflected by a single magnet beam scanning device supplied with a drive signal having a steplike waveform or by a series of sequentially operated, controllable deflection magnets arranged along a beam pipe to sequentially deflect the beam toward the object to be irradiated from different positions.

Method and system for scanning a beam of charged particles to control

A scanning beam deflection system and method utilizes a beam scanning device for producing rays diverging from a central axis of a beam of charged particles and a deflection magnet assembly for deflecting the scanning beam substantially 270.degree. within an evacuated deflection chamber such that the deflected scanning beam exits an offset beam window in the deflection chamber and has rays diverging from the central axis of the deflected scanning beam at substantially the same angle as the diverging rays produced by the beam scanning device. The system and method is particularly useful for irradiating internal surfaces of hollow articles with the deflection chamber and deflection magnet assembly disposed along an axis of symmetry of the object.

Scanning beam deflection system and method

An area beam of electrons capable of delivering large doses of electron irradiation at small dose rates and having a predetermined distribution pattern is provided by an electron accelerator comprising plural discrete cathodes positioned as required to achieve the desired pattern. An individual emission control is provided for the filament of each cathode. In a preferred embodiment plural cathodes are movably mounted in a row extending transversely of the transport path of material to be irradiated, a plurality of such rows being positioned along the direction of transport.
