Clay-containing soils and shale are treated with a combination clay stabilizer having an alkali metal asphalt sulfonate in combination with a quaternary ammonium salt to reduce swelling of the clay component of the soil and shale.

Drilling mud compositions including a first concentration of powdered latex and a second concentration of SAS are described. The second concentration of SAS can be greater than or equal to the first concentration of latex. In some examples, the second concentration of SAS can be greater than the first concentration of latex. The drilling mud compositions may include an oil-based carrier, or a water-based carrier. An example technique includes dispersing a first predetermined amount of powdered latex and a second predetermined amount of SAS in a water-based carrier to form a water-based mud. Another example technique includes dispersing a first predetermined amount of powdered latex and a second predetermined amount of SAS in an oil-based carrier to form an oil-based mud.

Wellbore drilling compositions

Techniques for drilling wellbores are described. The techniques include a) introducing a drilling fluid composition into a borehole defined by a formation; b) introducing a thinner composition including at least one tannin and at least one metal salt into the borehole; and c) contacting the thinner composition and the drilling fluid composition in the borehole, wherein the at least one tannin and at least one metal salt are not complexed ex situ. The at least one metal salt includes at least one copper salt, at least one zinc salt, or both at least one copper salt and at least one zinc salt.

Methods for drilling wellbores using thinner compositions

A drilling fluid may include a carrier and a lubricant composition. The lubricant composition includes ethylene bottoms heavy pyrolysis oil. For example, the heavy pyrolysis oil may be bottoms of a fractionated fuel oil product separated from ethylene gas produced by a cracking of a hydrocarbon feedstock in a furnace.

Drilling fluid lubricants

Spacer fluid compositions comprising water, a clay, and a sulfur-containing polyether surfactant are disclosed, and such compositions often can further include a weighting additive, an antifoaming additive, and a co-solvent. These spacer fluid compositions can be used to treat metal casing and to remove drilling fluid residue for improved cement bonding in wellbore applications.

Additives for oil-based drilling fluids

Disclosed herein is a polymer useful in a method of forming a wellbore fluid additive. This polymer comprises a polyethylene backbone comprising pendant aminoalkylsulfonic acid amides which comprise a carbonyl directly attached to a backbone carbon, and an amide formed via the amine group from the aminoalkylsulfonic acid. Methods of preparing these polymers by addition of the aminoalkylsulfonic acid to a polymeric anhydride are disclosed. Methods related to oil extraction using the wellbore fluid with the additive are also disclosed.

Wellbore fluid additives and methods of producing the same

A sulfonated, oxidized rubber composition and a neutralized, sulfonated, oxidized rubber composition are provided. The sulfonated, oxidized rubber composition, preferably a composition containing such sulfonated, oxidized rubber composition, can be used as an additive in or for asphalt. The neutralized, sulfonated, oxidized rubber composition, preferably a composition comprising such neutralized, sulfonated, oxidized rubber composition, can be used for oil field applications such as preventing the loss of fluids used during such oil field applications. A process of preparing such compositions includes contacting a rubber composition, such as butyl rubber in the form of waste tire particles, with an oxidizing agent to provide an oxidized rubber composition. The oxidized rubber composition is then contacted with a sulfur-containing acid to provide a sulfonated, oxidized rubber composition. The sulfonated, oxidized rubber composition is then contacted with a base to provide a neutralized, sulfonated, oxidized rubber composition.

Also disclosed is a stable liquid composition comprising a liquid carrier, an oil-soluble polymer, and a solid particulate wherein said liquid carrier is selected from the group consisting of olefins, terpenes, esters, and combinations of any two or more thereof and said liquid carrier, oil-soluble polymer, and solid particulate are each present in said composition in a stabilizing amount sufficient to effect the formation of a stable liquid suspension.

A stable liquid suspension composition comprising a liquid carrier, a solid fatty acid or a salt thereof, and a solid particulate is disclosed wherein said liquid carrier is selected from the group consisting of oils, olefins, terpenes, glycols, esters, ethers, alcohols, and combinations of any two or more thereof and said liquid carrier, solid fatty acid or salt thereof, and solid particulate are each present in said composition in a stabilizing amount sufficient to produce a stable liquid suspension. Also disclosed is a stable liquid composition comprising a liquid carrier, an oil-soluble polymer, and a solid particulate wherein said liquid carrier is selected from the group consisting of liquid alkenes, terpenes, esters, and combinations of any two or more thereof and said liquid carrier, oil-soluble polymer, and solid particulate are each present in said composition in a stabilizing amount sufficient to effect the formation of a stable liquid suspension.

A new stable liquid suspension of a non soluble particulate material, and a method of preparation of same are provided. Such compositions comprise at least one oil, one oil soluble resin and a non oil soluble particulate material mixed together In the appropriate quantities and conditions.
