A method for a system including a plurality of encoders each for receiving a first signal and encoding to generate a respective second signal for sending to a respective subscriber, comprising receiving, in each encoder, the first signal from a first source, while testing a signal path between a second source and the encoders, the first source on a first assembly, the second source on a second assembly, and each encoder on a respective third assembly, while each encoder is receiving the first signal from the first source, receiving, in each encoder, a third signal from the second source, generating, from each encoder, a fourth signal based on the third signal, the fourth signal being a redundancy signal and receiving and examining the fourth signal at the second source and subsequently receiving the first signal from the second source.

A separately replaceable printed circuit board or card for use in a shelf of a telecommunications system with plural twisted pairs connected to corresponding plural subscribers via said card, each subscriber channel on each card including a low pass filter connected both to POTS and broadband services.

Replaceable printed board assembly (PBA)

A shelf or housing is connected to a narrowband network and to a broadband network for serving a plurality of subscribers includes two sections, one for lowpass filters and another for line and network termination cards. The line termination and network termination equipment are interconnected by a bus internal to the shelf for providing subscriber access. The shelf or housing can be used as a hub for connecting to a remote shelf or housing that includes the line termination equipment for connection to subscribers. Although the internal bus of the shelf or housing is shown in a non-redundant embodiment, an increased level of equipment protection can be provided by placing one half of a redundant equipment pair in one shelf or housing and the other half in the other shelf or housing and sharing network termination equipment between such shelves or housings.

An xDSL (x-Digital Subscriber Line) signal is multiplexed with POTS on a twisted pair between a subscriber modem and line termination equipment in a shelf that also includes network termination equipment for connection to a broadband network. In the system and method, redundant signal paths are continuously tested to determine if any faults are present while the operating signal paths are in use. If any faults are present in the redundant signal paths, they can be addressed while the operating circuits are still in use. This minimizes the chance that a switch from an operating signal path to a redundant signal path because of a fault in the operating circuit will result in downtime.

Telecommunications system for providing both narrowband and broadband services to subscribers

In an optical fiber telecommunications network for providing both narrowband telephony signals and broadband video services over a single optical fiber using a single optical carrier, an optical distribution shelf includes a plurality of optical distribution units and interface units for interfacing with a controlling microprocessor. The optical distribution units receive baseband TDM telephony signals in serial format and the broadband video signals and function to frequency division multiplex the broadband video signals with the baseband telephony signals. The multiplexed signal is used to frequency modulate an optical carrier for transmission on a single optical fiber.

An automatic inventory retrieval system collects inventory and status information regarding the presence or absence of plug-in master and slave units in the slots of various shelves in a telecommunications terminal, such as a network element, by having independent masters in each shelf polling associated slaves at a relatively frequent polling rate and collecting information for storage until reception of a relatively infrequent master polling signal provided from a network control unit to all of the shelves. Communication between the control and the various shelves is provided over a balanced serial link interface comprising differential pairs, whereas communications internal to the shelves and the network control may be by means of single-ended signals. Redundancy in the network element is accommodated with a single serial link between the central control and the shelves by use of time-division multiplexing. The relatively frequent slave address polling in the shelves may be done on the order of every several hundred milliseconds or less, whereas the relatively infrequent polling of the master units in the shelves by the central control occurs at a frequency on the order of once every second or more.

To maximize the usefulness of micro controllers, a single micro controller is programmed to selectively perform multiple functions based on code segments stored within the micro controller, so that a single programmed micro controller may be used to perform one of a number of different tasks depending upon where the micro controller is used. A pin of the micro controller is adapted to receive a logical signal to which the code responds and selects the function to be performed by the micro controller. The programming of a micro controller to perform multiple functions takes advantage of the full capacity of the micro controller and reduces the numbers of micro controllers that must be inventoried to satisfy the required functions.
