A method for sending a variable length response message in a master-slave communication system begins by issuing a command from a master device to a slave device. A response message is generated by the slave device. The length of the response message is determined by the slave device and is communicated from the slave device to the master device. The master device requests the rest of the response message from the slave device, and the slave device then sends the rest of the response message to the master device.

A method and apparatus for preventing false alarm activation is provided. According to one embodiment of the invention, a determination () is made as to whether an instruction from a controller is a commanded reset, and control of a Subscriber Line Interface Circuit is taken () from a voice processor circuit when the instruction is a commanded reset.

A reconfigurable node for a hybrid fiber cable network includes fiber slots housing a transmitter or receiver interfacing to a head end, coax slots housing an RF brick interfacing with subscribers and RF plug-in modules providing connectivity between the fiber and coax slots. The plug-in modules include connection points, for connection to a fiber or coax slot. A fiber impedance element, associated with the transmitter or receiver in that fiber slot, is connected to each fiber slot. Each fiber impedance element has a different impedance value. A coax impedance element, associated with the RF brick in that coax slot, is connected to each coax slot. Each coax impedance element has a different impedance value. An impedance sensing circuit detects a DC level associated with each connection point which corresponds with the impedance element in a respective fiber or coax slot to determine the location of transmitters, receivers or RF bricks.

Reconfigurable node for a hybrid fiber cable network

A network of managed elements, in which code necessary for the integration of the elements into the network is contained in the elements themselves. A network proxy polls the elements to determine the presence of a new element or a revision to the code of an existing element. When found, code is copied from the element to the proxy, which serves as an interface between the elements and a network management system.
