A method to operate a vehicle equipped an internal combustion engine and a transmission coupled to drive wheels. The vehicle is equipped with a parking brake and has an electronic control unit with memory and the engine in fluid communication with an exhaust aftertreatment system. The method includes the steps of determining whether the engine is operating in idle mode for a predetermined period of time; determining whether NOx emissions exceed a predetermined level after the predetermined period of time; and limiting the engine speed not to exceed a predetermined engine speed until an operator engages the parking brake and engages an engine ignition switch.

The present invention makes it more difficult for engine operators to defeat the idle shutdown feature by detecting current engine operating conditions to verify that the selected operating mode is consistent with current engine operating conditions.

A system and method for controlling engine speed of an internal combustion engine provide automatically returning to a set speed selected with a hand throttle after operating at idle or near idle. The system and method are particularly suited for operation in driving a mud pump used in petroleum drilling applications where the operator dials-in a desired operating speed corresponding to a desired pumping rate. The engine is returned to idle or near idle to allow additional sections of pipe to be added. The engine then automatically returns to the previously selected set speed without additional manipulation of the hand throttle. In one embodiment, dual hand throttles are provided to support remote station operation and control of the engine speed.
