A mobile terminal includes means for controlling the encoding of a digital video signal that further includes means for monitoring at least one parameter of a radio frequency communication signal received at the mobile terminal. The control means also includes a means for forming a signal to the monitored parameter for controlling at least one encoding parameter of the video encoder.

The invention relates to a method and arrangement for ciphering an information transfer connection. The invention can be advantageously applied in a TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) cellular system offering broadband circuit switched services. An essential idea of the invention is that the information to be ciphered in a transmission burst is divided into at least two blocks ( ) and said blocks are ciphered in ways that are not identical with each other ( to ). Then the reliability of ciphering is better because the amount of information encoded using one and the same ciphering algorithm and key is smaller. In addition, the reliability of the ciphering can be varied by changing the number and/or size of the information blocks in a burst.

Method and arrangement for ciphering information transfer

A cellular system comprises base stations and terminals. A certain first base station ( ) supports only a certain first modulation method ( ) and a certain second base station ( ) supports both the first modulation method ( ) and a certain second modulation method ( ). Method and apparatus for controlling the operation of a video codec designed for encoding video data suitable for radio transmission between a network and a mobile station. The invention is particularly applicable where the transmission errors are unpredictable, and entails monitoring one or more parameters of the received or transmitted signal and providing a feedback signal based on the monitored signal, the feedback signal controlling the encoding parameters in the algorithm of the video codec.

A data transmission method and system for circuit switched and other services that can be employed in TDMA-based systems, and that supports the use of one or several types of modulation (e.g., 8-PSK modulation), in addition to a &ldquo;normal&rdquo; modulation (e.g., GMSK modulation) on a radio interface. An additional modulation/channel coding (e.g., one based on 8-PSK) may be used in the downlink transmission, while the normal modulation/channel coding (e.g., one based on GMSK) may be used in the uplink transmissions, under a variety of different conditions. A first condition arises where the radio conditions allow the use of the additional modulation in both directions, but the mobile station transmitter does not support it. A second condition arises where the radio conditions allow the use of the additional modulation in both directions, and the mobile station supports it, but the user requests a downlink-biased or uplink-biased data transmission service. A third condition arises where the mobile station supports the use of the additional modulation in both directions, but the uplink (or downlink) radio conditions do not permit the use of the additional modulation (e.g., because of link budget limitations.) Also, a lower data rate may be desired on the uplink in order to reduce the power consumption of the mobile station, and/or in the downlink direction to avoid unnecessary interference. This is especially true in the case that one direction or the other has less data to transmit, and the high speed data transmission mode is not required (even if supported).

A method for controlling the handover of a DECT portable part from a first DECT fixed part to a second DECT fixed part during provision of a data service, both fixed parts communicating with a GSM mobile switch center, the method comprising the first fixed part detecting that the handover has been requested, and in response modifying its control of the link between itself and the mobile switch center to inhibit acknowledgement to the mobile switch center of data not received by the portable part from the first fixed part.

The method according to the invention relates in general to transmission in cellular telecommunication systems and in particular to optimization of the data transfer mode. In the method according to the invention the data transfer mode is controlled using the downlink quality measured by the mobile station (MS) and the uplink quality measured by the base station (BTS). For transparent connections it can be determined a desired maximum threshold for the RXQUAL value, and when the uplink or downlink RXQUAL exceeds that maximum threshold (ie. the bit error rate BER exceeds the maximum value), a more error-tolerant channel coding of a lower transmission speed is taken into use and the channel resources available are increased e.g. by growing the number of time slots to keep the user data transmission rate constant.
