In a device for controlling a flow of metal from a casting vessel into a casting mould, the inflow of metal is to be controlled by means of a stopper, which may be lifted and lowered according to a preset program and/or by means of a bath-level measuring device. In order to prevent any manual operation of a control lever for the stopper, a lifting rod for the stopper is disposed in a module box together with a vertical guide and a computer-controlled electromechanical drive for the lifting rod. The module box is exchangeably fastened to the casting vessel by clamping elements. Before casting begins, a drive motor for the stopper (13) is to be connected by means of electric plug-and-socket connections to a control cabinet. From the start of casting, the stopper movement is controllable exclusively by means of the electric drive.

An electromagnetic stirrer for stirring the molten core of a continuously cast strand has a casing. The casing accommodates a body of oil as well as electromagnetic stirring coils which have respective magnet cores and are immersed in the oil. A system of cooling pipes extends into the oil and has water inlets and water outlets. The stirrer may be constructed as a unit with a continuous casting mold and, in such an event, the water inlets are connected to a source of mold cooling water while the water outlets function to discharge or recycle the water. Alternatively, the stirrer may be disposed in the secondary cooling zone. Here, the water inlets are connected to a source of secondary cooling water for the strand and the water outlets are in communication with spray nozzles which serve to spray the strand with the secondary cooling water.

Electromagnetic stirrer for continuous casting

A continuous casting apparatus has a mold table which is supported by an oscillator and carries a continuous casting mold. The mold is provided with a casting passage having an inlet end for molten material and an outlet end for a continuously cast strand. An electromagnetic stirrer for the molten material is mounted on the mold table independently of the mold adjacent to the outlet end thereof.

During the continuous casting of at least two strands, withdrawn with the same speed from the continuous casting molds, the withdrawal speed for both strands should be adjusted in accordance with the quantity of cast metal, typically steel, infed to the first continuous casting mold i.e. also the level of molten metal therein. The infed quantity of steel is regulated in at least one further continuous casting mold as a function of such withdrawal speed or velocity.

Method and apparatus for continuous casting of a number of strands

A continuous casting mold for casting strands, such as billets and blooms having a cross-sectional shape possessing corners, preferably a four-cornered cross-section, comprising an upper mold part and a lower mold part. Walls movable independently of one another of the lower mold part are movable about pivot shafts or equivalent structure arranged transversely with respect to the direction of travel of the cast strand and operatively connected with the upper mold part. The independently movable walls of the lower mold part can be shifted under the action of resilient elements, such as springs, towards the hollow cavity or mold compartment. The pivot shaft connected with each wall is arranged to be movable in a transverse direction with respect to the side of the wall associated with the hollow cavity or compartment of the mold.

A strand guide arrangement or roller aprons for a multiple strand billet- or bloom casting installation containing more than two strands for the continuous casting of metals, especially steel, wherein rollers of the at least partially curved roller aprons are individually driven by drive elements through the agency of power transmission shafts, the drive elements being arranged externally of the outer roller aprons. The roller aprons are subdivided into segments. The power transmission shafts associated with the rollers of the inner roller apron extend below one of the outer roller aprons and up to a location in front of the inner roller apron.

An apparatus for measuring the geometry of the hollow mold compartment of continuous casting molds comprising a measuring head displaceable essentially in the direction of its lengthwise axis and having three impact or contact elements arranged at a first side of the measuring head. The impact elements form a triangle which is parallel to the lengthwise axis of the measuring head. A first measuring feeler is arranged at this first side so as to bear against the neighboring mold wall and is perpendicular to the plane of the triangle and at least one resilient impact element is arranged at a second side of the measuring head opposite the first side and produces a force-vector directed away from the triangle at a right angle. A second measuring feeler is arranged at the second side of the measuring head coaxial to the first measuring feeler and bears against the opposite wall of the hollow mold compartment. A conveyor apparatus for delivering flux powder to the mold of a continuous casting installation for metals, especially steel, comprising two powder containers, a pneumatic conveyor means arranged between a supply container having large capacity and disposed externally of the direct servicing or operating region of the continuous casting mold and a container at the region of such mold having relatively small capacity. The pneumatic conveyor means conveys the flux powder by means of a pneumatic transport or conveying agent to the container of small capacity where the pneumatic conveying agent is expelled. A mechanical conveyor means extends from the container of relatively small capacity at the region of the mold to a location above the level of the metal bath in the continuous casting mold.

A method of cooling a strand cast in an oscillating mold during continuous casting, wherein the strand during passage through the mold is indirectly cooled in a first zone and guided at all sides and in a final or terminal zone is guided by substantially strip-shaped support surfaces extending essentially in the direction of travel of the strand as well as directly cooled by water guided in a substantially strip-shaped configuration along the strand. The strand, following such indirect cooling and prior to the strip-shaped direct cooling, is directly cooled in an intermediate zone by the application of sprayed water. The mold arrangement used for the performance of the method comprises a first cooling device composed of cooled walls bounding the mold compartment or cavity and a terminal cooling device composed of strip-shaped arranged support surfaces disposed approximately parallel to the lengthwise axis of the strand and strip-shaped cooling water channels located between the support surfaces. The cooling water channels are equipped with water infeed means. Between the first and the terminal cooling devices there are arranged spray nozzles constituting an additional cooling device, the spray pattern of such spray nozzles impinging the hollow mold compartment which is open at all sides between the first cooling device and the last or terminal cooling device.
