Controllers communicate commands in terms of goals and constraints. A goal is an objective. A constraint is information regarding how the goal is to be achieved. For example, a constraint may specify when, or how much of, a resource may be used to achieve a goal. Additionally, or alternatively, a constraint may specify an acceptable or expected accuracy or tolerance regarding how the goal is achieved. Each controller is expected to achieve assigned goals in accord with associated constraints. Thereby, system communication may be reduced. If controllers achieve goals according to specified constraints, the controllers do not need to provide updates or be updated regarding the status of activities of other controllers or regarding other operational context information. In some embodiments, commands are generally not acknowledged. Instead, serving controllers respond to a command with an error message if a goal cannot be met in accord with an associated constraint.

Communication in a distributed system

A printing system includes a plurality of print media processing modules which transfer print media therebetween during printing and a fault management agent associated with each of the modules for acquiring fault-related data from the respective processing module. A fault management system is in communication with the fault management agents and receives fault-related data from the fault management agents. The fault management system processes the fault related data to identify faults in the system, such as when a first of the processing modules is a cause of fault-related data acquired in a second of the processing modules. When a fault is identified, a reconfiguration agent may reconfigure the printing system to mitigate an impact of at least one of the identified faults.

A system is provided to allow for planning and scheduling the work flow for reconfigurable production systems having a plurality of modules, which may have alternative capabilities. The system includes a system controller, at least one planning function for planning the production of work units without utilizing off-line modules, and at least one scheduling function for scheduling the production of work units without utilizing off-line modules.

Planning and scheduling reconfigurable systems around off-line resources

A system and method for self-synchronization of modular production systems having components with various alternative capabilities for processing and transporting work units along transport highways, for various component/transport highway configurations. The method includes determining jobs of interest, with each job requiring the production of at least one work unit. The configuration of the components, including at least one machine module, and the transport highway is determined. Each component duration time is determined and a default self-synchronization time is identified. The default self-synchronization time is optimized by adjusting not less than one component duration time.

Method for self-synchronization of modular production systems

A configurable self-identifying workpiece transport system is described for moving an associated workpiece relative to a plurality of associated workpiece functional units selectively performing operations on the associated workpiece. The transport system includes a plurality of transport modules and a control unit. The plurality of transport modules are disposed in selected positions relative to the associated workpiece functional units, and each of the plurality of transport modules stores identification data and functionality data specific to the transport module. The control unit includes an automatic identification system in communication with each of the plurality of transport modules for retrieving the identification data and the functionality data from each of the plurality of transport modules and generating an itinerary for moving the associated workpiece relative to the workpiece functional units. Each of the plurality of transport modules includes a local communication circuit adapted to selectively communicate with adjacent transport modules. In one embodiment, the control unit is distributed among the plurality of transport modules and in another embodiment, a global system bus is provided by a central control unit for communicating with each of the plurality of transport modules through the global bus. The local communication circuit includes photo optic devices and the global system bus uses a two wire interface.

Module identification method and system for path connectivity in modular systems

Respective coordinators are spawned or activated to coordinate activities with regard to respective tasks. Where the respective tasks require cooperative efforts of a plurality of controllers, the respective coordinators ensure cooperative efforts by generating and communicating cooperative commands to the plurality of controllers. The coordinators may act as clearinghouses for system data, selectively requesting and relaying system information to appropriate controllers. For example, a document processing system activates respective coordinators for respective sheets of print media. The respective coordinators orchestrate the transportation of the sheets by sequentially orchestrating the activities of sequentially selected pluralities of transportation actuator controllers. Selected sheet position information from sensors and/or from models maintained by the actuator controllers may be relayed by the coordinators to selected actuator controllers as appropriate to the sheet transportation tasks.

A method is presented for a learning-based strategy utilized within message-initiated constraint-based routing for digital message communication among nodes in an ad-hoc network, in which each node includes attributes. The method includes determining local attributes for each of the nodes and defining constraints on the attributes. Each node is provided access to the attributes of each neighboring node. Each message transmitted over the network has a message type, which includes a destination specification, route specification, and objective specification. Constraint checking and cost estimation checking are performed for each message type. Cost estimation is utilized to converge on an optimal message path. The message that is routed within the network includes the address of a sending node, the address of the source node, route constraints, destination constraints, the number of route constraints, the number of destination constraints, message identification number, sequence identification number, and routing objectives.

A method is presented for message-initiated constraint-based routing for digital message communication among nodes in an ad-hoc network, in which each node includes attributes having attribute values. The method includes determining local attributes for each of the nodes in the ad-hoc network and defining constraints on the attributes. Time-aware strategy for message-initiated constraint-based routing

A combinatorial search method implemented in a computer control system utilizes on-line state-space planning of operations for multi-step production processes. The planner considers various possible combinations of actions, searching for one that correctly transforms the initial state of the object into the specified desired final state. Each combination of actions the planner considers is called a search node, with each node containing a plan representing a series of actions of various machines on a single object and also containing the predicted state of the object with those actions applied either forward or backward. The method includes determining which of the search nodes to extend further at each search iteration and if the object state in the chosen search node conforms to the desired state of the object, or whether actions should be added to the node's plan. Actions that are applicable to the chosen node's object state are selected, transformations are applied to the attributes, and the resulting plan is returned to the system.

System and method for production planning utilizing on-line state-space planning

A system is provided to allow for automated planning and scheduling the work flow for reconfigurable production systems having a plurality of modules, with each module having alternative capabilities. The system includes a system controller, a planning function for planning the concurrent production of regular and diagnostic work units, and a scheduling function for scheduling the concurrent production of regular and diagnostic work units.

The planning function plans utilization of selected module capabilities in the production of jobs having not less than one work unit and the scheduling function schedules utilization of selected module capabilities in the production of jobs. The failure identification function identifies the failure of module capabilities to perform the work units for a scheduled job.

Planning and scheduling for failure recovery system and method

A media transport array for forming sequential media streams feeding a media processing system in which serial flows, parallel flows, or both are desired are structured from standard, batch fabricatable media path modules. Each media path module includes a frame unit, intermodule latching means, media control electronics, and media state sensing electronics. Within each media path module, at least one media transport nip receives media and passes it to an independently actuated media director. Media guides support media as it moves into and out of the media director.
