A transmission mode selection for packet-oriented transmission of useful data between a first and a second communication device is provided, where lists of transmission modes for the communication devices are transmitted to a quality-of-service device. The quality-of-service device uses available transmission resources to select one or more transmission modes from the lists such that the quality of service, which is dependent on the selected transmission modes, can be assured by the available transmission resources. The selected transmission modes are transmitted to a connection controller which prompts further selection of a transmission mode from the transmission modes for the communication devices. The useful data are then transmitted between the communication devices using the transmission mode selected by the further selection.

Method and communication system for selecting a transmission mode for transmitting payload data

A respective number of terminals are managed by network agents. When initializing a connection between two terminals, the network agent initializes the connection if the relevant terminals are arranged in the same bandwidth-uncritical area. If one of the terminals is arranged in a bandwidth-critical area, the network agent ascertains the requested bandwidth and sends a resource request to an associated bandwidth broker, which uses a topology function and knowledge of bandwidth used by existing connections to check the availability of the requested bandwidth in the bandwidth-critical area of the communication network. The use of network agents and the fact that resource requests are no longer required in the communication network dynamically reduces the load on bandwidth brokers and superordinate bandwidth brokers to a significant extent.

Method for reserving bandwidth in a packet-oriented network, in which a packet-oriented communication link is set up between a plurality of network elements using at least one communication path. In this case, an identification number which is unique to the communication link and is intended to identify the communication paths associated with the communication link is allocated. A bandwidth value for a respective communication path is then determined as the maximum bandwidth required by network elements in this communication path, and bandwidth in the respective communication path is reserved using the bandwidth value.
