In the field of audio amplifiers, the prior art for high output power levels is now to use class D technology. In this technology, audio signals are converted into a pulsed signal. An audio amplifieris proposed, with a modulator sectionfor accepting an input signal and outputting two intermediate signals, wherein the modulator sectionis designed to generate the intermediate signals by modulating the input signal, with an amplifier sectionfor accepting the two intermediate signals and outputting two amplified signals, wherein the amplifier sectionis designed to generate the two amplified signals by amplifying the two intermediate signals, the amplifier section having two power stages, with an end sectionfor accepting the two amplified signals and for outputting an output signal for a loudspeaker device, wherein the audio amplifiercan be switched between parallel operation and bridge operation.

A class-D amplifier () for an audio signal (), having a signal path (), which has an output stage () and a signal-processing unit (), contains a voltage source () for the output stage () having a voltage (U) of at least two magnitudes (U, U), a measurement location () before the signal-processing unit (), and a control and evaluation unit () for predictively determining a voltage requirement (B) for the output stage () for the proper amplification of the audio signal () from the audio signal () at the measurement location (), wherein the control and evaluation unit () selects a magnitude (U, U) that is minimally sufficient for the voltage requirement (B) on the basis of the voltage requirement (B) and applies said magnitude to the output stage () before the amplification.
