The invention relates to a gas generator for a safety system, in particular for a vehicle occupant restraint system, comprising a combustion chamber which contains propellant, a liquid chamber which contains liquid, and a mixing chamber in which a gas developed on burning of the propellant and the liquid mix with each other. The gas generator further comprises a liquid guide surface onto which the liquid when released is applied substantially tangentially, and a gas directing channel and a surface delimiting the gas directing channel. A flow break-off edge is provided in the mixing chamber, which flow break-off edge is defined on one side by the liquid guide surface and on the other side by the surface delimiting the gas directing channel. The gas directing channel directs a stream of developed gas into the mixing chamber at an angle of between approximately 60&deg; and 120&deg; with respect to the liquid guide surface in a region of the flow break-off edge, so that the liquid loosing from the flow break-off edge is entrained by the gas stream.

A gas generator for a safety system, in particular for a vehicle occupant restraint system, comprises a combustion chamber filled with propellant, in which a hot gas is generated after igniting and burning of the propellant, a fluid chamber containing a fluid, a mixing chamber in which fluid and hot gas are mixed in a mixture ratio, and at least one control device which controls the mixture ratio of fluid and hot gas in the mixing chamber.

The present invention relates to an inflator for a safety device, in particular for a vehicle occupant restraint system, comprising a housing (,), a combustion chamber formed in the housing and including a solid propellant (,) for generating hot gas, and a coolant (,) introduced into a predetermined flow path of the hot gas. The inflator in accordance with the invention is characterized in that the flow path of the hot gas passes through a nozzle (,) comprising a pitot zone (,) in which the hot gas emerging from the combustion chamber (,) has a high static pressure, and comprising a nozzle neck (,) in which the hot gas builds up a high dynamic pressure, and in that the coolant (,) is arranged in a sleeve-shaped reservoir (,) extending from the pitot zone (,) at least in part into the nozzle neck (,). The inflator in accordance with the invention permits an effective reduction in the exhaust gas temperature of the generated hot gas.
