At least one fan is provided by which humid drying air from the inside the at least one cylinder may be suctioned off from a front-sided opening of the at least one cylinder and discharged as discharge air through a duct. The dryer includes at least one sensor for determining the humidity of the discharge air flow, the data thereof being processed in a control with the initial humidity of the web of material and the humidity of the fresh air flow for closed loop control of the evaporative capacity of the dryer.
