A method for handling biometric templates is disclosed for an authenticating device applying biometric authentication. The method comprises acquiring a set of biometric data associated with a prospect user, and acquiring a decryption key (associated with an encrypted biometric template associated with an enrolled user of the authenticating device) from a key carrying device external to the authenticating device responsive to the key carrying device being in a vicinity of the authenticating device. The method also comprises retrieving, from a storage medium, at least a part of the encrypted biometric template associated with the enrolled user, decrypting the retrieved part of the biometric template using the acquired decryption key and performing an attempt to authenticate the prospect user as the enrolled user based on a comparison between the acquired set of biometric data and the decrypted part of the biometric template.

The present invention generally relates to a method for authenticating a user of an electronic device comprising a fingerprint sensor. The method comprises acquiring a sequence of verification images. Estimating, based on the images a first and a second verification force value indicative of a force applied by the object on the fingerprint sensor when the verification images were acquired. A verification image representation and a verification force value forms a verification template for each of the first and second images and forces. Matching the first and second verification template with at least one of a plurality of stored fingerprint enrolment templates in a respective first and second matching step. When the first and second matching steps each results in a positive match between the respective verification template and a respective one of the plurality of stored fingerprint enrolment templates, providing a signal indicating successful authentication of the user.

The present invention relates to a method for transitioning a device controller comprised with an electronic device from an at least partly inactive mode to an at least partly active mode, wherein the method comprises: determining the area portion of a finger detecting structure being touched by an object; determining a force applied on the fingerprint sensing device. A method of authenticating a finger against a stored template and expanding the stored template. The method comprises acquiring a present fingerprint image; retrieving a stored enrollment representation, comprising said stored template, and a representation of at least a first previous fingerprint image acquired in connection with a previous failed authentication attempt; and determining if the stored template should be expanded. When it is determined that a first match between a present fingerprint image representation and the stored template fulfills a first template updating requirement and a second match between the present fingerprint image representation and said at least first previous fingerprint image representation fulfills said second template updating requirement, a signal indicating a successful authentication is provided; and a first expanded template is formed based on said stored template, said present fingerprint image and said at least first previous fingerprint image.
