A light guide () comprises a light guide plate () with an illumination region (). The light guide plate has a first main surface () and a second main surface () opposite to the first main surface, and comprises an out-coupling arrangement () for coupling light () propagating in the light guide plate out of the light guide plate through the first and/or the second main surface in the illumination region. The out-coupling arrangement comprises first out-coupling stripes () extending over the illumination region, each first out-coupling stripe defining a horizontal extension of a first light channel () in the light guide plate and being configured to couple light propagating substantially in a first direction along the first light channel, out of the light guide plate. Adjacent first out-coupling stripes are separated by an intermediate region () with light coupling properties substantially different from those of the first out-coupling stripes.

Light guide for segmented illumination

A light guide having a light guide body plate having a plurality of elongated light channels extending substantially parallel to each other; the light guide having an out-coupling arrangement for coupling light propagating in the light channels out of the light guide body plate through the first and/or the second main surface. In a horizontal transverse direction, each light channel is confined between two confining stripes formed of a solid confining material having a second refractive index lower than the first refractive index, confining stripes between two adjacent light channels having a height less than the thickness of the light guide body plate.

The specification and drawings present a new apparatus and a new apparatus for compensation of the optical aberrations caused by a non-planar window (or windows in general, for example windows having a curved surface) using a diffractive (optical) element such as a diffractive foil in electronic/camera devices such as electronic devices with displays. According to an embodiment, an optical window of an electronic device/camera may have at least a non-planar front surface which causes an aberration of an input image. This aberration can be corrected to be below predefined one or more parameters (such as a circle with a predefined maximum radius and/or a directional shift by a predefined maximum value) using a diffractive element/foil located on/near a back surface of the optical window or between the back surface of the optical window and a sensor/camera image plane where the input image is focused on.

Compensation of optical aberrations caused by non-planar windows

A light pipe includes a light input end and a diffractive structure. The diffractive structure includes elongated formations having diffractive properties for coupling light out from the light pipe to provide backlighting of a flat-panel display. The elongated formations are curved, the curvature being dependent on the location of a light source at the light input end.

A light pipe includes a surface provided with a pattern that has diffractive properties, where the pattern has uniform, mutually different areas on the surface such that some of the areas are configured to distribute light from a light input end of the light pipe to form macroscopically uniform distribution of light and some other areas are configured to couple light out from the light pipe in order to produce lighting, and where the relative proportion of surface covered by areas configured to distribute light is arranged to decrease in relation to increase of distance from the light input end.

The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for manufacturing an optical coupling arrangement, and a specific coupling arrangement. A substrate waveguide () and at least one coupling element () in the coupling arrangement are made of polymer material in the same replication process at the same time. At least one diffractive coupling element () is then formed in the polymer material by placing the polymer material against a replication mould, which comprises a surface profile model of at least one diffractive coupling element () that is patterned into the replication mould by means of micro lithography.

Optical coupling arrangement

The invention relates to a new light pipe () for providing backlighting () of a flat-panel display () by means of at least one light source so that the light pipe has at least one surface which comprises patterns. The patterns have diffraction properties for conducting the light in the direction of the display, and the patterns comprise uniform, mutually different areas having a certain distribution on the surface of the light pipe. The local outcoupling efficiency of the light pipe depends on the characteristic properties of the patterns, which are dependent on the distance to the light source or its wavelength.

A method of producing an antireflection structure for use on a display or a window surface or both in an electronic device, such as a mobile phone. The display can be an LCD with a top polarizer and a bottom polarizer. The antireflection structure is imparted on the top polarizer by a roller embossing process. In particular, the embossing is carried out in the same manufacturing process when the polarizer is produced. The antireflection structure has a plurality of sub-wavelength periodic grooves. The antireflection structure on the window surface can be imparted using an embossing process or an injection molding process.

A system and method is described for distributing light within a light guide which is used for illuminating the user interface of an electronic device. The light guide is formed as a thin film and impressed with a pattern of input and output diffraction gratings to control the transmission of light into and out of the light guide to efficiently illuminate the user interface.

A method and device for improving lighting of a display having a top surface for viewing. The device includes a light guiding panel located substantially on the top surface of the display and at least one linear light source located adjacent to the light guiding panel for providing light thereto, wherein the light guiding panel has a first surface adjacent to the top surface of the display, a second surface opposite to the first surface, and at least one side edge for admitting a portion of the light provided by the linear light source through the side edge into the light guiding panel between the first and second surfaces; and the second surface includes a plurality of elongated grooves having dense-rare boundaries for reflecting part of the admitted light in a total-internal reflection fashion towards the display through the first surface of the light guiding panel, and wherein the dense-rare boundaries have a distribution density which varies depending on a distance between the dense-rare boundaries and the side edge.

Lighting device for non-emissive displays

A light source arrangement is used for providing illumination to an essentially planar area ( ) in an electronic device. The arrangement comprises an encapsulated semiconductor light source ( ) in the vicinity of an edge of an essentially planar light guide ( ). Light emitted by the encapsulated semiconductor light source is to be coupled into the light guide through the edge. The encapsulated semiconductor light source comprises a semiconductor chip ( ) encapsulated in an encapsulation block ( ) that comprises a curved surface facing the edge of the planar light guide. The encapsulation block ( ) has also a D-shaped cross section in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the essentially planar lightguide so that the arcuate part of the D corresponds to said curved surface. The encapsulation block extends to a predetermined distance in an extension direction locally perpendicular to the plane of said D-shaped cross section.
