High performance polyethylene (HPPE) members include at least 5 wt-% of a radiopaque component. The HPPE members are biocompatible and the radiopaque component is a particulate at least partially arranged inside a HPPE filament of the HPPE members. The radiopaque component may have a particle size of at most 1 &#x3bc;m, preferably at most 0.5 &#x3bc;m. Methods of making the HPPE members and various medical devices and repair products which include the HPPE members are also provided.

The invention relates to a multilayered material sheet comprising a consolidated stack of unidirectional monolayers of drawn polymer. The draw direction of two subsequent monolayers in the stack differs. Moreover the strength to thickness ratio of at least one monolayer is larger than 4.5.10N/m. The invention also relates to a ballistic resistant article comprising the multilayered material sheet and to a process for the preparation of the ballistic resistant article.

Multilayered material sheet and process for its preparation

The invention relates to ballistic resistant article having a multilayered material sheet which includes a consolidated stack of unidirectional monolayers of drawn polymer, whereby the draw direction of two subsequent monolayers in the stack differs. At least one monolayer comprises a plurality of unidirectional tapes of the drawn polymer, aligned in the same direction, whereby adjacent tapes do not overlap. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of the multilayered material sheet, and to a ballistic resistant article comprising the multilayered material sheet.

This invention relates to a process for the preparation of an antiballistic article, the method comprising: a) Providing a transparent uniaxially stretched polymeric film with at least one layer I comprising a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer A and at least one layer II comprising an amorphous or semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer B, of which polymer B has a glass transition temperature less than the melting temperature of polymer A if polymer B is amorphous or of which polymer B has a melting temperature less than the melting temperature of polymer A if polymer B is semi-crystalline; b) Stacking at least two of the uniaxially stretched polymeric films of a) at an angle a of between 45&#xb0; and 135&#xb0;, such that the films are in contact with each subsequent film through at least one layer II, to form an assembly; c) Compressing the thus formed assembly at a temperature above the glass transition temperature of polymer B if polymer B is amorphous, or above the melting temperature of polymer B if polymer B is semi-crystalline, and below the melting temperature of polymer A, to obtain an haze of at most 50% and having an energy absorption for 17 grain FSP according to the STANAG 2920 standard of at least 12 J/(kg/m). The invention also relates to antiballistic articles.

Transparent antiballistic article and method for its preparation

The invention concerns a high performance polyethylene (HPPE) member comprising at least 5 wt-% of a radiopaque component, the HPPE member is biocompatible and the radiopaque component is a particulate at least partially arranged inside a HPPE filament of the HPPE member. Furthermore, the radiopaque component has a particle size of at most 1 &#x3bc;m, preferably the radiopaque component has a particle size if at most 0.5 &#x3bc;m. The invention also concerns a method of making the HPPE member and various medical devices and repair products comprising the HPPE member.

The invention relates to a method for the preparation of a transparent antiballistic article. The method comprises providing a plurality of anisotropic polymeric film layers, stacking the film layers to form an assembly and compressing the thus formed assembly at a temperature and pressure sufficient to consolidate the film layers, whereby the temperature is not more than 50&#xb0; C. below the melting temperature of the polymer, the pressure is at least 80 MPa and sufficiently high to obtain an optical transparency according of at least 50% transmission. The invention also relates to a ballistic resistant article having an energy absorption for 17 grain FSP according to the STANAG 2920 standard of at least 10 J/(kg/m) and an optical transparency according of at least 50% transmission.

The invention relates to a nanofiber membrane layer having a basis weight of 0.01-50 g/m2 and a porosity of 60-95%, comprising a nanoweb made of polymeric nanofibers with a number average diameter in the range of 50-600 nm, consisting of a polymer composition comprising a semicrystalline polyamide having a C/N ratio of at most 5.5. The invention also relates to water and air filtration devices comprising such a nanofiber membrane layer.

The invention relates to coated optical fibers comprising soft primary coatings and to such primary coatings for protecting glass optical fibers having a sufficient high resistance against cavitation. In particular, the primary coatings have a cavitation strength at which a tenth cavitation appears (&#x3c3;) of at least about 1.0 MPa as measured at a deformation rate of 0.20% minand of at least about 1.4 times their storage modulus at 23&#xb0; C. The coating preferably shows strain hardening in a relative Mooney plot, preferably has a strain energy release rate Go of about 20 J/mor more, and preferably has a low volumetric thermal expansion coefficient. The invention furthermore provides a method and apparatus for measuring the cavitation strength of a primary coating.

Coated optical fibers

The invention relates to a radiation curable composition comprising radiation curable components wherein at least one component of the radiation curable composition contains a functional group which, when attached to an acrylate group has a calculated Boltzmann average dipole moment of higher than 3.5 Debye. The invention further relates to radiation curable optical fiber coating compositions having a high dielectric constant.
