A technique for protecting location information of a subscriber in a mobile network is disclosed. A User Mobility Server (UMS) receives a first query from a first call state control function (CSCF). The UMS transmits a call setup and a subscriber identity to a servicing-call state control function (S-CSCF). The S-CSCF may have no record of the subscriber identity due to a restart are some other event. The UMS receives a second query from the S-CSCF based in part of the subscriber identity. The UMS transmits a home address of a mobile station to the S-CSCF. The UMS may also transmit a profile download to the S-CSCF.

Recovery techniques in mobile networks

A digital telecommunications system wherein the telecommunications centers of the calling and called terminal are arranged to perform handshaking concerning the speech codec used by the terminals. Depending on the link between the telecommunications centers, the telecommunications centers are arranged to connect call connections past a transcoder unit or to control the transcoder units to let encoded speech through without speech encoding operations in such a way that speech encoding and decoding are carried out only in the terminals. Handshaking between the telecommunications centers is carried out as outband signalling.

In connection-oriented switching of packet data in known mobile communications systems, resources of the transmission path between the serving node (SGSN) and the radio network subsystem (RNS) and memory resources of the radio network subsystem are reserved unnecessarily due to the burst-like nature of packet data. Thus the transmission network's limited address space and the radio network subsystem's management resources are consumed. The invention concerns such connection management in a mobile communications system, which is suitable for packet-switched data transmission. The method according to the invention is characterized in that the logical connection between the serving node (SGSN) and the radio network subsystem (RNS) is released, so that the logical connection between the serving node (SGSN) and the mobile station (MS) remains, and the released logical connection is reconnected, when relaying of user data starts.

Management of packet switched connections in a mobile communications network

A technique for protecting location information of a subscriber in a mobile network is disclosed which forwards a registration request from the subscriber to an S-CSCF including the subscriber's TA and then forwarding a location update from the S-CSCF to an HSS including the subscriber's TA. Upon the S-CSCF losing data, lost data may be restored to the S-CSCF from the data stored in the HSS. The HSS may store data in a non-volatile memory such as a hard disk drive. The technique may also include forwarding a registration request from the subscriber to an S-CSCF including the subscriber's TA and then forwarding a location update from the S-CSCF to an HSS and storing data in a non-volatile memory such as a hard disk drive in the S-CSCF so as to be protected against loss. Upon the S-CSCF losing data, lost data including the subscriber's TA may be restored to the S-CSCF from the data stored in the S-CSCF.

An arrangement for providing IP mobility for a mobile station (MS) provides a care-of-address (COA) for routing data packets when the MS is away from home. In one embodiment, the arrangement includes support nodes, called gateway GPRS support nodes (GGSN) or serving GPRS gateway support nodes (SGSN), and a foreign agent (FA) having an IP address. In order to save IP addresses and radio resources, the FA is integrated into one of the support nodes (e.g., the SGSN), and the IP address of, or an IP address provided by the FA is also used as the MS COA.

IP mobility mechanism for a packet radio network

The invention relates to an authentication method intended for a telecommunications network, especially for an IP network. From a terminal (TE) in the network a first message (RR) containing an authenticator and a data unit is transmitted to the network, the data unit containing information relating to the manner in which the authenticator is formed. For carrying out authentication in the network, the data unit contained in the first message is used for determining a check value, which is compared with the said authenticator. To make it unnecessary for the terminal to perform any complicated and heavy exchange of messages when attaching to the network and for still obtaining the desired security characteristics for use, such an identification unit is used in the terminal which receives as input a challenge from which a response and a key can be determined essentially in the same manner as in the subscriber identity module of a known mobile communications system, a set of authentication blocks is generated into the network, of which each contains a challenge, a response, and a key, whereby the generation is performed in the same manner as in the said mobile communication system, at least some of the challenges contained by the authentication blocks are transmitted to the terminal, one of the challenges is chosen for use at the terminal, and, based on it, a response and key for use are determined with the aid of the terminal's identification unit, in the said first message (RR) the network is notified with the aid of the said data unit of which key corresponding to which challenge was chosen, and the authenticator of the first message and the said check value are determined with the aid of the chosen key.

Authentication in a telecommunications network

The invention relates to selection of the implementation of a service, and particularly to selection of the implementation of a supplementary service in a mobile communication system, in a situation where a user can use different terminals the properties of which vary. In the solution of the invention, at least two different implementations are defined for a service, the terminal requirements of which differ from each other. The implementation of the service is selected (, and) on the basis of the properties of the terminal used. Thus the implementation of the services is made as optimal and flexible as possible by implementing each service function at the most useful location considering the properties of the terminal and network.

Selection of service implementation

A method for providing a new service or information about it by a server to a mobile terminal (MS) in a packet-switched network comprising several support nodes. An identifier and PDP address are allocated to the MS. An intelligent network node is informed about the identifier and the PDP address of the MS. The PDP address stored in the intelligent network node is used for routing the new service to the mobile terminal. For example, the server can send the intelligent network node an inquiry requesting the PDP address of the MS, and the IN node can send to the server the PDP address of the MS, whereby the server is able to communicate with the MS using the PDP address indicated by the intelligent network node.
