Disclosed is a method for operating a radio telephone subscriber unit or mobile station (10) to register with a cellular system. The method includes the steps of determining from registration-related information (REGID) that is received from the cellular system that the subscriber unit must register with the cellular system; selecting a channel on which to send a registration message to the cellular system; transmitting the registration message to the cellular system on the selected channel; determining that the registration message was accepted by the cellular system; and, for a case where cellular system paging channels are in a same set of control channels as cellular system access channels, remaining tuned to the selected channel until a receipt of next registration-related information from the cellular system. For the case where the registration-related information includes a value of REGID, the method may include a further step of modifying a value of NXTREG with the received REGID and a value of REGINCR.

Method and apparatus for registering a radio telephone subscriber unit

A method for operating a cellular communications network includes the steps of (a) providing a set of mobile stations that are capable of operating in an idle/sleep mode of operation; (b) transmitting a forward control channel to the set of mobile stations, the forward control channel being organized as a frame structure that is continuously repeated, wherein each frame structure includes an overhead information portion and a plurality of paging information portions; and (c) operating the set of mobile stations to all receive the overhead information portion from every nth frame structure and to receive an assigned one of the paging information portions from every frame structure, wherein n is an integer that is greater than one. The value of n may be fixed or may be made variable. In a presently preferred embodiment of this invention n is equal to six. The method further includes a step of placing individual ones of the set of mobile stations into a low power mode of operation when not receiving the overhead information and paging information portions. In a presently preferred embodiment of this invention the overhead information portion includes at least a system parameter overhead message and may include other overhead messages.

Synchronizing radio telephone to receive every Nth overhead message train

A wireless communications system (1) has at least one base station, such as a personal base station (5), and a plurality of mobile stations (10) capable of wireless communications with the at least one personal base station. In response to input from a user of a first mobile station, a first step of a method transmits a message from the first mobile station to the personal base station, the message including a request for service and information specifying another mobile station. The message is received at the personal base station and the request for service is interpreted as being one of a plurality of types. In one embodiment the message is interpreted in accordance with a state of the mobile station when transmitting the message. By example, the request for service is interpreted as a request to establish a simplex connection between the first mobile station and another mobile station, when the first mobile station is in an idle state, or as a request to transfer an on-going call from the first mobile station to another mobile station, when the first mobile station is in a conversation state. A next step of the method contacts at least one other mobile station from the personal base station for one of establishing the simplex connection and transferring the on-going call.

A power boost system for a portable radiotelephone (10) employs a booster unit (52) to provide sufficient power for operation of the radiotelephone as a mobile unit in a cellular telephone system, and a junction box (54) which, in combination with a mechanical holder (56) allows for hands-free operation of the radiotelephone in the mobile telephone environment. The junction box is provided with a speaker (62) and a microphone (64) to facilitate the hands-free operation. The desired output power level for radiation from a vehicular antenna (72) is provided by a gain-controlled amplifier (80) in response to a pulse-width modulated command signal (48, 90) provided by a computer (12) within the radiotelephone. A memory (70) within the booster unit stores power level data for the higher levels of power to be used during transmission by the booster unit, the power level data being provided to the computer (12) in generating the power command signal. The memory (70) also stores calibration data of the booster unit attained during manufacture of the booster unit, this data being provided to the computer (12) to compensate for measured values of received signal strength for accurate search of the strongest signal.
