This invention discloses improved single antenna interference cancellation (SAIC) receivers utilizing joint channel estimation for suppression of interference of co-channel signals. This invention describes the technique to perform joint channel estimation for either synchronous or asynchronous co-channel signals without a prior knowledge of the interfering training sequence or its timing position. The invented joint channel estimation can require initial detection of the desired signal and can be implemented as a multistage equalization structure.

Joint channel estimator for synchronous and asynchronous interference suppression in SAIC receiver

A method of operation of a receiver of a mobile station or a base station of a radio access network and corresponding equipment, the method for especial use in providing interference cancellation according to a single antenna interference cancellation (SAIC) algorithm. The method includes a step () in which a channel estimator () estimates channel impulse response components for use by a SAIC equalizer (); in estimating the channel impulse response components, the channel estimator () minimizes a special cost function (J(h)) with respect to the components of the channel impulse response h. In some embodiments, the method uses an iterative least mean squares procedure to minimize the cost function (J(h)).

Method and apparatus for determining components of a channel impulse response for use in a SAIC equalizer

A method of operation of a receiver of a mobile station or a base station of a radio access network and corresponding equipment, the method for use in providing interference cancellation according to a single antenna interference cancellation (SAIC) algorithm without degrading performance in case of little or no interference. The method uses a metric M (having a value that is large when there is strong interference) to gauge whether or not to process an incoming signal burst using a processing path () including a module implementing a SAIC algorithm or instead to process the incoming signal burst using a conventional equalizer processing path (). A selector module () selects one or the other path based on comparing the metric M with a threshold &#x3b4;. Various metrics M are possible.

Method and apparatus for switching on and off interference cancellation in a receiver

A method and an arrangement are provided for generating an estimate of the impulse response of a radio channel. There is generated () an initial estimate of the impulse response of a radio channel, and a signal is equalized () by using the initial estimate. The equalized signal is decoded (). Method and arrangement for iteratively improving a channel estimate

A method and an arrangement are presented for processing received data blocks in a digital radio receiver. Received data blocks are equalized () and channel decoded, () after which they are checked () for errors. Additionally there is monitored () the amount of received but not yet equalized and channel decoded data. As a response to a finding indicating that an equalized and channel decoded data block contains errors (), it is checked () whether the amount of received but not yet equalized and channel decoded data is below a certain threshold. Adaptive method and arrangement for implementing incremental redundancy in reception

The invention relates to a method for determining the strength of co-channel signals, and a receiver utilizing the method. The training sequences of the signals to be received are classified into subsets, and a channel estimate related to the signal is formed by comparing the training sequences of the received signal to the training sequences of the subset signals. By means of the channel estimate, a strength estimate is formed for each received signal, the estimate being used to arrange the received signals according to their strength. When the signal strengths are known, it is possible to decrease the effect of the interference signals on the signal to be detected. In a diversity receiver, a correlation result can be formed of the channel estimates of the signals of each subset, excluding the signal to be detected, the result being used in interference elimination.
