The invention relates to a method for performing measurements in a wireless terminal comprising a receiver for receiving radio frequency signals, means for taking samples from the received signals and means for performing measurements on the basis of said samples. The samples taken from the received signal are stored. Measured values are calculated for the stored samples after a set of samples has been stored.

A mobile telephone having speech recognition and speech synthesis functionality. The telephone has a memory for storing a set of speech recognition templates corresponding to a set of respective spoken commands and a transducer for converting a spoken command into an electrical signal. Signal processing means is provided for analysing a converted spoken command together with templates stored in the memory to identify whether or not the converted spoken command corresponds to one of the set of spoken commands. The phone user can select to download, into the phone's memory , a set of templates for a chosen language, from a central station via a wireless transmission channel.

A method for selecting a telephone number by means of voice control, the telephone numbers which can be selected are stored, and for each telephone number which can be selected at least one identifier, such as a name is stored. In the storing phase, the identifier is pronounced and divided into one or several sub-identifiers, which are stored, and to which information on the telephone number is linked, wherein the telephone number mentioned in the selecting phase can be dialed either by pronouncing said sub-identifiers in any order according to a combination or partial combination of the sub-identifiers.

The invention includes a method and an apparatus for controlling a telephone, particularly a mobile telephone used in a cellular network. Advantageously the user interface of the telephone is voice-controlled, whereby dialling can be made without the use of hands e.g. when driving a car. In the method according to the invention, the task of a speech recognizer can be made easier using phone numbers in the phone's memory (102), ie. on the basis of a check command given by the user the phone selects the number to be recognized from among the numbers stored in its memory, whereby also an incorrect recognition can be automatically corrected.
