A processing device and method applying the same for processing a coated or uncoated fibrous web is provided. The device comprises a belt configured to extend around a guiding element, at least one counter-element being disposed outside said belt to provide a contact area with the belt, such that the belt and the counter-element establish therebetween a web processing zone for passing a web to be processed therethrough. The processing zone length is defined by the disposition of the belt's guiding element and/or by the configuration of the counter-elements. The contact pressure applied to a web in the processing zone is within the range of between about 0.01 MPa and about 200 MPa.

Processing device and method of operating the device for processing a coated or uncoated fibrous web

A calender includes at least two roll stacks which each have at least three rolls, and in each of which the web path of a fibrous web meanders between each roll pair of the stack. In order to produce a selectable fibrous web grade, the web is passed between each roll pair of each stack, so that at least one roll pair in at least one stack is in nip contact to form a nip that calenders the web. The web runs between each roll pair of each roll stack and, in order to produce a selectable fibrous web grade, a selectable number of rolls is in nip contact with each other in each stack to form at least one nip that calenders the fibrous web.

A paper web moistened in a paper machine and reeled on a machine reel is calendered in a multinip calender arranged apart from the paper machine, whose roll assembly is formed of a first set of rolls and a second set of rolls in the travel direction of the paper web. At least one surface of the paper web is moistened with at least one pre-moisturizer, whereafter the paper web is guided to the first calender nip of the first set of rolls and one surface of the paper web is moistened with at least one intermediate moisturizer, whereafter the paper web is guided to the first calender nip of the second set of rolls, wherein a paper web having a roughness of 1.0-1.1 &#x3bc;m and/or gloss of 54-57% or 56-60% is produced as a result of calendering.

Method and apparatus for producing calendered paper

A multi-roll calender () has one or several sets of rolls () attached to a frame () so that each set of rolls has at least three rolls. At least the first roll () and the last roll () have casings which can be moved toward the intermediate rolls (). The first roll () and the last roll () are fixedly attached, at least one of the intermediate rolls () in the set of rolls is fixedly attached, and the other intermediate rolls are provided with lightening elements for lightening the auxiliary means related to the intermediate rolls. The roll nips (N) in the set of rolls () are closed by moving the first roll towards the intermediate rolls (), and the roll nips between the last roll and the fixed intermediate roll included, are closed by moving the last roll towards the intermediate rolls ().

A system for maintaining calender rolls of a paper machine clean when producing high-gloss paper or coated paper, such as LWC or MWC. To prevent a coating agent, such as coating dye, from adhering onto and soiling a smooth surface of a calender roll, with an overheating phenomenon, the system has a second measurement station () provided with measuring and indicator means for producing an output indicating soiledness of the web (W) or a humidity profile. When the output of the second measurement station () indicates excessive soiledness or an uneven humidity profile, the system performs at least one of: cleaning the surface of the smooth-surfaced calender roll; changing the nip load in the calender (); making a correction adjustment of the CD-directional humidity profile of the web (W); cutting the web (W) and conducting it into the pulper; and/or changing the running speed of the web (W).

System for keeping calender rolls of a paper machine clean

A multi-roll calender, supercalender, soft calender or equivalent has at least one nip (YN, PN, KN, PN, AN) profiling a fibrous web (W) which is being calendered. A shoe roll () constitutes at least one of the calender rolls which define the nip. A shell () of the shoe roll is of a composite material, and the shoe roll is provided with internal shell-loading shoes () for profiling the shell, the nip and/or the fibrous web.

The surface of a web is monitored by a fault detection system (), a machine condition monitoring system, a quality measurement system, a web moisture measurement and/or a web temperature measurement and the soiled part of the surface of the roll is detected and localized by means of a soiling monitoring apparatus (). A control system () controls a cleaning device () to remove the detected soiling. As a web (W) travels in a paper or board production or finishing process or in finishing machinery the web and/or the surface of the roll is monitored and after a detected deviation the surface thereof is momentarily spread with a liquid while machinery is running at the same time as the web (W) travels over said roll surface.

Method of calendering a paper web or equivalent

A paper machine roll, in particular for a soft calender or supercalender, which includes a metal frame, roll ends, and shafts. The frame is coated with a polymer coating over at least a middle area or central region thereof while lateral regions may optionally remain uncoated. In order to equalize a difference in temperature between the roll ends and the optionally non-coated lateral regions of the metal frame, on one hand, and the coated central region area of the roll, on the other hand, an arrangement for equalizing the difference in temperature is provided by heating the roll ends and the optionally non-coated lateral regions of the metal frame.

A reel-up comprises a surface winding drum; two rails to support a reeling drum; and secondary carriages movable linearly along the rails and provided with press devices to press against the reeling drum to maintain a predetermined linear pressure in the nip between the surface winding drum and the paper reel as it increases in size. Each secondary carriage comprises an actuator arranged to press the press device against the reeling drum with a predetermined force to control the linear pressure at each set position of the secondary carriage without influence from the actuator which sets the secondary carriage depending on the growth of the paper reel.

A web is reeled onto successive reeling drums to form respective jumbo rolls by reeling the web onto a first reeling drum at a reeling position to form a first jumbo roll, the first reeling drum being driven by a center drive. When the first jumbo roll is full, a second reeling drum is delivered to a standby position and is accelerated to web speed. A transfer device is employed to transfer the first jumbo roll to an exchange position while the center drive remains connected thereto. The second reeling drum is transferred to the reeling position and the web is exchanged from the first jumbo roll to the second reeling drum. The first jumbo roll is decelerated and the transfer device is shifted from the first jumbo roll to the second reeling drum. The center drive is connected to the second reeling drum.

Reel-up and a method of reeling

The invention relates to a web winding method and a winder for carrying out core replacement in a support drum winder. The core replacement is carried out with a sequence of measures, where the cutting of the web, removing of completed rolls (3) and placing of a new roll core between the support drums (1,2) is carried out by one single device comprising cutting, pushing and feeding means. The web (18) is held unmovably towards the trailing support drum (1) during the core replacement by means of a retainer device (16,17). For forwarding the removal of the rolls these are lifted by the same retainer device, if needed, to a height as required by the pusher device.

Method and apparatus for conducting the end of a web from a machine roll or the like through a subsequent web processing arrangement, such as a reeling arrangement, along a path defined by web guiding members. The apparatus comprises a fetching and gripping arrangement for gripping the end of the web on the machine roll and around which the web is wrapped a desired number of turns, and a web end conduction member carried by a conveyor arrangement for conducting the web doubled over itself through the web processing arrangement, the web unwinding simultaneously both from the machine roll and from the fetching and gripping arrangement.
