An access point for a wireless wide area network can allocate two or more fundamental channels among wireless devices. In various implementations, the fundamental traffic channels may be for use with incompatible versions of the same air interface protocol (e.g., the 1xRTT and EV-DO versions of code division multiple access ('CDMA)). The access point may additionally have a reserved bandwidth that it can dynamically allocate to wireless devices to supplement the bandwidth allocated to them on the fundamental channels. For example, when sending or receiving large bursts of data, the access point can allocate additional bandwidth to the wireless devices, and after transmission of the large bursts of data, the access point can release the additionally allocated bandwidth.

System and method for scalable bandwidth allocation in a wireless wide area network

Assigning CDMA channel codes in a multiple beam zone sector such that they may be reused within the same sector. In an exemplary embodiment, the method includes configuring directional antennas in a cell sector to provide multiple beam zones in a cell sector and assigning channel codes for use within the beam zones such that each channel code is assigned for use in only one beam zone of any set of three consecutive beam zones in the cell sector. The reassignment is preferable conditioned upon the mobility status of the user. This effectively reduces the inter-user interference by ensuring at least two intervening beam zones are located between zones that are using the same channel codes, and that the second user is not mobile. The channel codes may be Walsh codes or quasi-orthogonal functions (QOFs).

Method and system of reusing walsh codes to increase forward channel capacity

Methods, systems, and media for identifying areas of outbound roaming on a wireless network are disclosed. A roaming-network event record listing roaming events of subscribers of a home network is received. A home-network event record listing network events on a home network is also received. The two records are correlated to identify roaming events and network events having matching caller identifiers and time stamps within a predetermined range. Location data of a network event is adopted as location data for a matching roaming event. A home-network wireless-communications antenna, tower, or station having a service area in which a concentration of roaming events have occurred is identified. The distance of the roaming events from the antenna is determined and distance bands corresponding to that distance are plotted on a map to aid in identifying locations at which outbound roaming has occurred.

Identifying outbound-roaming locations in a wireless-communications network

Presently disclosed is a method for reducing interference in a wireless distributed antenna systems. In an embodiment, interference is reduced by selectively placing a first wireless remote unit in a reduced signal interference mode. A controller sends a signal, such as a reverse link power-down signal, to the first remote unit after detecting less than a threshold incoming signal strength at the first remote unit. In an alternative embodiment, the controller requests that a given remote unit switch to the reduced signal interference mode when the controller is receiving signals from a mobile station through at least two different remote units.

Interference cancellation system and method for wireless antenna configuration

What is disclosed is a method of operating a wireless communication system which includes a base station and a wireless communication device in communication over a voice communication link and a data communication link. The method includes, in the wireless communication device, receiving a first page over the voice communication link. The method also includes, in the wireless communication device, entering into a data-only communication mode over the data communication link, where the voice communication link is not monitored by the wireless communication device when in the data-only communication mode, and transferring a page halt message to the base station upon entry into the data-only communication mode, where the page halt message indicates the wireless communication device is halting receipt of further pages over the voice communication link. The method also includes, in the base station, if the page halt message has been received and upon receipt of a second page for delivery to the wireless communication device, transferring the second page over the data communication link.

Data mode paging in wireless communication networks

An access point for a wireless wide area network might receive a request from a wireless device to establish a session on the wireless wide area network. In response, the access point might establish a circuit switched uplink channel and a packet switched downlink channel for communications with the wireless device during the session. The access point might communicate with other wireless devices in this manner as well. Additionally, the access point might employ power control methods for the circuit switched uplink channels, and it might employ rate control methods for the packet switched downlink channels.

System and method for asymmetric communications and control in a wireless wide area network

Elimination of intermodulation interference in a wireless communication system by removing a portion of the spectrum of transmitted signals. According to a received indication of an occurrence of intermodulation interference experienced by a narrowband receiver, mappings are performed between the predetermined narrowband channel frequency on which the narrowband receiver operates and the occupied channel frequencies of at least one broadband transmit signal. Narrowband candidate frequency ranges that linearly combine into frequencies that overlap the predetermined narrowband channel frequency are determined based on the mappings. The narrowband candidate frequency ranges that potentially contribute to the intermodulation interference are then selectively filtered by at least one notch filter until the intermodulation interference is substantially eliminated.

Method and apparatus for interference mitigation by removing a portion of the transmit signal

A private wireless network is able to provide wireless telecommunication services to subscriber mobile stations that also subscribe to a public wireless network. The private wireless network includes a private base transceiver station (BTS), a private mobile switching center (MSC), and a gateway service control point (SCP). The private BTS provides a private network wireless coverage area within which the mobile station can communicate with the base transceiver station over an air interface. The gateway SCP has a private network database containing private network data records for subscribing mobile stations. A private network data record includes a private network service profile and a private network locator address. The public wireless network has a home location register (HLR) with a public network database containing public network data records for subscribing mobile stations. A public network data record includes a public network service profile and a public network locator address. When a subscriber mobile station is active on the private wireless network, the private network locator address identifies the private MSC, and the public network locator address identifies the gateway SCP. By providing the private network wireless coverage area so that it overlaps the public network's wireless coverage area, the subscriber mobile station may be handed off between the private and public wireless networks.

The present invention provides a method and system for defining the mean opinion score (MOS) as a function of frame error rate (FER) and pilot signal strength. In an embodiment of the invention, an entity receives MOS scores that have been obtained using subjective tests for certain calls made within the network. Next, the entity receives FER and pilot signal strength samples that have been obtained for the calls for which MOS scores have been subjectively obtained. Finally, the entity calculates an equation for the MOS as a function of FER and pilot signal strength using a non-linear regression analysis.

System and method for determining the audio fidelity of calls made on a cellular network using frame error rate and pilot signal strength

Computer-implemented systems and computer-readable media for generating distance bands on a map to identify areas of outbound roaming on a wireless network are disclosed. A roaming-network event record listing roaming events for subscribers of a home network is received. A home-network event record listing network events on a home network is also received. The two records are correlated to identify roaming events and network events having matching caller identifiers and time stamps within a predetermined range. A radio access network has a reverse link frequency band for receiving signals from mobile stations and has first and second forward link frequency bands for transmitting signals to mobile stations. The second forward link frequency band has a greater frequency bandwidth than the first forward link frequency band and occupies a different part of the radio frequency spectrum. For certain types of communication sessions, such as voice and low-speed data, the reverse link frequency band and the first forward link frequency band are used. For other types of communication sessions, such as high-speed data and streaming video, the reverse link frequency band and the second forward link frequency band are used.

Method and system for selective usage of broadband forward link

Methods and systems for selecting data rates are described in a wireless network. The distance between a client and a base station serving the client device is determined. Based on that distance, a minimum threshold data rate is selected such that a larger distance corresponds to a higher minimum threshold data rate and a smaller distance corresponds to a smaller minimum threshold data rate. An actual data rate, not less than the minimum threshold data rate, is then selected, and signals are transmitted between the client device and the base station at the actual data rate. The actual data rate may be increased if there exists unused available bandwidth in the network. Events such as a change in distance or a timer expiring may result in a recalculation of the minimum threshold data rate.

Assigning CDMA channel codes in a multiple beam zone sector such that they may be reused within the same sector. Method and system of reusing walsh code to increase forward channel capacity

The wireless coverage of a wireless telecommunications network is divided into a plurality of cells, and each cell is further divided into an alpha sector, a beta sector, and a gamma sector. The alpha sectors are provided with a first frequency assignment that includes a first frequency band and a second frequency band. The beta sectors are provided with a second frequency assignment that includes the first frequency band and a third frequency band. The gamma sectors are provided with a third frequency assignment that includes the first frequency band and a fourth frequency band. The second and third frequency bands partially overlap in frequency. The third and fourth frequency bands also partially overlap in frequency. By using overlapping frequency bands, the benefits of hybrid frequency reuse may be achieved in a more spectrally efficient manner.
