A system and method for optimized control of an assembly for drilling a borehole comprises a self-tuning, multivariable controller and an optimization engine that manipulates the setpoints of the controller such that drilling performance may be continuously optimized. The method includes evaluation of a characteristic system time constant, using this constant to compute bit ROP, using computed ROP to compute process gains, which are used to tune the multivariable controller, automatically refining controller setpoints based on controller performance, and using an optimization engine to systematically adjust controller setpoints such that drilling parameters are optimized based on any of several performance indicators, or a weighted combination of performance indicators. The method further comprises using at least one performance indicators which may be computed using estimated bit ROP: bit wear parameter; gradient of cost per foot; gradient of bit ROP versus WOB; simplified mechanical specific energy; and hydraulic specific energy.

Optimizing performance of a drilling assembly

Casing shoes comprise a nose portion having an inner profile and an outer profile. At least one cutting structure is on the outer profile. A stem section extends longitudinally from the nose portion. At least one of a float valve mechanism, a cementing stage tool, a float collar mechanism, and a landing collar structure is disposed within the stem section. Methods of installing sections of casing within wellbores comprise advancing the at least one section of casing into contact with subterranean formation material with a casing shoe attached thereto. At least one of a float valve mechanism, a cementing stage tool, a float collar mechanism, and a landing collar structure is carried within the casing shoe into the wellbore. The wellbore is drilled or reamed using at least one cutting structure on the casing shoe as the at least one section of casing is advanced into the wellbore.

Casing and liner drilling shoes having integrated operational components, and related methods

Systems, program product, and methods are provided which include analyzing the drillability of a subterranean formation and a database of performance characteristics for drilling bits to facilitate bit design optimization and selection for that formation. Using component subterranean formation data, computer models can be generated for the drillability of a target section in terms of physical, mechanical, and micro-structural properties, and for postulated suitable drilling bit performance characteristics based on physical, mechanical, and micro-structural properties of the target section. The drilling bit performance characteristics are then updated by quantifying effects of the drilling system to be employed. Each performance characteristic can be normalized and plotted on its own axis for easy comparison. Next, a candidate drilling bit design is selected from a library of computer models of drilling bit characteristics for a suite of drilling bit designs. An optimization of the drilling bit design may be also performed.

The exterior of the drilling apparatus may include a plurality of blade structures carrying at least one such cutter thereon and including a sufficient amount of bearing surface area to contact the formation so as to generally distribute an additional weight applied to the drilling apparatus against the bottom of the borehole without exceeding the compressive strength of the formation rock.

A superabrasive cutter-equipped rotary drag bit especially suitable for directional drilling in subterranean formations is provided. The bit may employ PDC cutters in an engineered cutter placement profile exhibiting optimal aggressiveness in relation to where the cutters are positioned along the profile of the bit extending from a cone region laterally, or radially, outward toward a gage region therefore. The engineered cutter placement profile may include cutters exhibiting differing degrees of aggressiveness positioned in order to maximize rate-of-penetration and minimize torque-on-bit while maintaining side cutting capability and steerability.
