A method of detecting a leak in an evaporative emissions system includes sealing an evaporative emissions system, achieving a first target pressure in the evaporative emissions system, achieving a second target pressure in the evaporative emissions system after achieving the first target pressure, and monitoring a system pressure subsequent to the second target pressure achieving step to determine a leak condition of the evaporative emissions system.

Leak detection module entropy method for evaporative emissions system

A vane pump includes a housing that provides a bore in fluid communication with an inlet passageway and an outlet passageway, and a rotary assembly that is arranged within and configured to rotate relative to the bore. The rotary assembly includes a rotor that is mounted to a shaft and has multiple slots. The rotor has a first and second faces that engage the housing. A vane is received in each of the slots, each vane has first and second surfaces that extend a length in a longitudinal direction from a first end portion to a second end portion. The first end portion is received in its respective slots. The rotary assembly includes a recess on at least one of the first face, the second face, the first surface of the first portion, and the second surface of the first portion.

Low stiction vane pump for evaporative emissions system

A leak detection module (LDM) includes a housing, a canister valve solenoid (CVS) that is arranged within the housing and in fluid communication along a first fluid passageway between first and second ports. The module also includes a pump that is arranged within the housing and is in fluid communication with the first and second ports, and a pressure sensor that is in fluid communication with at least one of the first and second ports. A first controller is arranged in the housing and is in communication with the pump, the CVS and the pressure sensor. The first controller runs a test procedure using the pump and operating the CVS between open and closed positions to monitor a pressure within the module. The first controller communicates a result based upon the monitored pressure to a second controller that is arranged outside the housing and remotely from the module.

Evaporative emissions leak check module with integrated control and communication system

Methods and systems are provided for conducting diagnostics to indicate whether a fuel system and/or an evaporative emissions system of a vehicle has a source of undesired evaporative emissions, or not. A method comprises conducting such a diagnostic via evacuating the fuel system to a target vacuum, then sealing the fuel system from atmosphere and monitoring a pressure bleed-up in the fuel system, and dynamically adjusting a pressure bleed-up threshold responsive to one or more conditions that impact the pressure bleed-up during the diagnostic, and indicating undesired evaporative emissions responsive to the pressure bleed-up reaching the adjusted pressure bleed-up threshold. In this way, interpretation of the results of such a diagnostic may be more robust, completion rates may improve, and engine operation may be improved.

Systems and methods for conducting vehicle evaporative emissions test diagnostic procedures

A method for operating a vehicle with an internal combustion engine is provided that includes regulating a pressure in a fuel tank by scheduling an engine start-up event based on a rate of change of the fuel tank pressure to reduce fuel tank venting emissions, where the rate of change of the fuel tank pressure is determined based on an ambient temperature and an in-tank pressure.

Evaporative emission control system and method

Methods and systems are provided for regulating evaporative emissions from a fuel system. In one example, a method may comprise spinning an engine unfueled responsive to a hydrocarbon concentration at a fresh air end of a fuel vapor canister increasing above a first threshold. The method may comprise spinning the engine to pull hydrocarbons away until a hydrocarbon concentration at a purge end of the fuel vapor canister, opposite the fresh air end, increases above a second threshold.

Systems and methods for EVAP leak testing

Methods and systems are provided for diagnosing a vehicle fuel system for a presence or absence of undesired evaporative emissions. In one example, a method comprises evacuating the fuel system of a vehicle to a variable vacuum target as a function of a volatility of fuel in a fuel tank positioned in the fuel system and a loading state of a fuel vapor storage canister configured for capturing and storing fuel vapors from the fuel tank. In this way, analysis of a pressure-bleedup portion of the diagnostic may be more reliable and completion rates of the diagnostic may be improved, while conducting the test in an environmentally fashion.

Systems and methods for vehicle fuel system and evaporative emissions system diagnostics

Methods and systems are provided for conducting an evaporative emissions test diagnostic on a vehicle fuel system and evaporative emissions control system during engine-on conditions. In one example, a first fuel vapor storage device is separated from a second fuel vapor storage device by a one-way check valve, thus preventing loading of the first fuel vapor storage device during conditions such as refueling operations, diurnal temperature fluctuations, or from running-loss vapors from a vehicle fuel tank. In this way, the evaporative emissions test diagnostic may be conducted during a cold-start event where an exhaust catalyst is below a predetermined threshold temperature required for catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons in the engine exhaust, without increasing undesired exhaust emissions.

Systems and methods for a vehicle cold-start evaporative emissions test diagnostic

Methods and systems are provided for diagnosing a vehicle fuel system for a presence or absence of undesired evaporative emissions. In one example, a method comprises conducting a test for undesired evaporative emissions stemming from a fuel system of a vehicle via in a first operating mode, evacuating the fuel system to a variable vacuum level through an entirety of a fuel vapor canister configured to capture and store fuel vapors, and in a second operating mode, evacuating the fuel system to the variable vacuum level through a portion of the fuel vapor canister. In this way, the diagnostic may be conducted in an environmentally friendly fashion, where analysis of a bleed-up portion of the test is not impacted by fuel volatility at the time of the diagnostic.

A method for diagnosing an evaporative emission control system that includes during a first state of a vapor blocking valve, determining a first rate of change of a fuel tank vacuum, during a second state of the vapor blocking valve different from the first state, determining a second rate of change of the fuel tank vacuum, and diagnosing an operational condition of the vapor blocking valve based on the first and second rates of change.

Evaporative emission control system and diagnostic method

Methods and systems are provided for operating an evaporative emissions system in a turbocharged engine. In one example, a method may include pulsing open a canister purge valve responsive to the turbocharged engine entering a boosted mode of operation. The canister purge valve may be opened for a duration long enough to close a check valve coupled between the canister purge valve and an intake of the engine.

Systems and methods for managing purge pathway pressure in turbocharged engines

A vehicle method for barometric pressure identification, including adjusting engine operation responsive to barometric pressure, the barometric pressure based on a pressure change at a sector of the fuel system when the sector is sealed with the vehicle travelling. The method may utilize a pressure change at the sealed sector of the fuel system, such as a sealed fuel tank, to identify barometric pressure, even with the engine off for extended durations of vehicle travel. As such, in a hybrid-vehicle application, including during hill descents in which the engine is maintained off, barometric pressure can still be updated.

Methods and system are provided for distinguishing fuel tank vacuum generation due to canister purge valve degradation from vacuum generation due to canister vent valve degradation. A fuel tank vacuum level is monitored after sealing the fuel tank from the atmosphere following an engine pull-down. If there is an ensuing change in fuel tank vacuum, canister purge valve degradation is determined, else, canister vent valve degradation is determined.
