Novel polystyrene grafted polyolefin compositions having a high level of grafting are made using a novel process which involves suspending styrene in water. The polystyrene grafted polyolefin compositions can then be converted into ion exchange membranes that are particularly useful in electrolytic cells.

In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a process for recovering an onium hydroxide from a solution containing an onium compound, including contacting the solution with a cation exchange material so that at least a portion of onium cations from the onium compound are adsorbed by the cation exchange material; contacting an acid with the cation exchange material to elute an onium salt; charging the onium salt to an electrochemical cell containing at least three compartments, a cathode, an anode, and in order from the anode to the cathode, a bipolar membrane and a cation selective membrane, and passing a current through the cell whereby the onium hydroxide is regenerated; and recovering the onium hydroxide from the cell. In another embodiment, the present invention relates to a process for recovering an onium hydroxide from a solution containing an onium compound, including contacting the solution with a cation exchange material so that at least a portion of onium cations from the onium compound are adsorbed by the cation exchange material; contacting an acid with the cation exchange material to elute an onium salt; charging the onium salt to an electrochemical cell containing at least two compartments, a cathode, an anode, and an anion selective membrane therebetween, and passing a current through the cell whereby the onium hydroxide is regenerated; and recovering the onium hydroxide from the cell.

Process for recovering onium hydroxides from solutions containing onium

In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a process for recovering organic hydroxide from contaminated solutions containing the organic hydroxide and impurities including charging the contaminated solution to a first electrochemical cell containing at least two compartments, a cathode, an anode and a size selective divider and passing a current through the first electrochemical cell whereby impurities migrate through the size selective divider; recovering a second solution containing organic ions from the first electrochemical cell and charging the second solution to a second electrochemical cell containing at least two compartments, a cathode, an anode and a divider and passing a current through the second electrochemical cell whereby the organic hydroxide is purified; and recovering the organic hydroxide from the second electrochemical cell. In another embodiment, the present invention relates to a process for recovering onium hydroxide from contaminated solutions containing the onium hydroxide and impurities including forming a first solution containing an onium salt and impurities from the contaminated solution; contacting the first solution with a size selective membrane under pressure, wherein at least a portion of the impurities pass through the size selective membrane thereby providing a second solution containing an onium salt and a decreased amount of impurities; charging the second solution to an electrochemical cell containing at least two compartments, a cathode, an anode and a divider and passing a current through the cell whereby the onium hydroxide is purified; and recovering the onium hydroxide from the cell.

Process for recovering organic hydroxides from waste solutions

A process for clarifying a metal allkyl reaction product comprising passing a first feed stream comprising metal alkyls, a first, substantially water-immiscible organic solvent, and solid contaminants through a first membrane filter, the first filter being substantially continuously vibrated when said feed stream is passing through and recovering from the first filter a first permeate substantially free of solid contaminants and a first concentrate containing solid contaminants.

A process for clarifying an alkoxylated product mixture produced using a calcium-based catalyst wherein the product mixture is heated to a temperature of from about 80.degree. C. to about 175.degree. C. to produce a filtration feed, the filtration feed being passed through a filter medium comprising material possessing polar groups to produce a clarified filtrate, the filtration feed being passed through the filter medium within about 5 days of being prepared, the filtration feed being passed through the filter medium until the desired degree of clarification is obtained, the temperature of the clarified filtrate being less than about 30.degree. C. but above the pour point of the clarified filtrate.
