A molten metal filter box. The filter box includes a filter housing provided in a flow path for molten metal. A horizontal partition is disposed within the filter housing and has at least one filter receiving passage. A filter medium in the shape of a substantially flat plate is positioned within the filter receiving passage and below an inflow path of the molten metal. The filter medium includes a hole. A filter handling tool is disposed within the hole. The filter handling tool can optionally include a handle secured to the molten metal filter box to suspend the filter medium. Advantageously, the filter medium can be removed by grasping the filter handling tool and removing the filter medium.

A ceramic foam filter for use in filtering non-ferrous metals and manufacturing method for same are disclosed. The ceramic foam filter includes calcined alumina as a core material and silica as a binder. Alternatively, the ceramic foam filter includes calcined alumina as a core material and boric oxide as a binder.

A transition plate for use in a direct chill (DC) casting system comprises a substantially annular body having an upper face and a lower face. At least a lower part of the body adjacent the lower face is made of a gas permeable refractory material, whereby gas can pass through the gas permeable refractory material and escape from the transition plate through at least the lower face.

A metal transfer device including a cast trough body that includes a vessel for receiving liquid metal, a heater for heating the trough body, and a reinforcing layer provided on an outer surface of the cast trough body between the trough body and the heater. The reinforcing layer includes a composite ceramic material having a high thermal conductivity.

A distribution device for use with a vertical casting system includes a body made of a refractory material, which includes a base and a peripheral wall. The base and the peripheral wall enclose a trough for containing and distributing liquid metal. A thermally insulating layer is located in a recess beneath the base. The refractory material of the body has a first thermal conductivity and the thermally insulating layer is made of a material having a second thermal conductivity that is less than the first thermal conductivity.

Disclosed is a heating system for molten metal handling devices, examples of which are troughs, launders and other vessels. The heating system may include a refractory containment body, heater assembly, a containment shell and a thermal inducing interface between the heater assemblies and the containment shell and/or refractory body.

A metal transfer device () includes a cast trough body () for receiving liquid metal, a heater () for heating the trough body, and a filler layer () between the trough body and the heater. The filler layer () comprises a cast refractory material having a high thermal conductivity.

A molten metal handling device comprising an outer shell defined by a bottom and two side walls, an insulating layer partially filling the outer shell and a thermally conductive castable refractory body for carrying molten metal, the refractory body being within the insulating layer. The device further includes at least one heating element positioned in the insulating layer, adjacent to the refractory body. The refractory body is preferably fabricated from a castable alumina or castable silicon carbide material.

An extraction device is provided for use when extracting a ceramic foam filter, as used for example in the production and processing of aluminum. A continuous casting installation includes a furnace () for heating metal to a first liquid metal temperature, a degassing unit (), a filter (), a heating unit () and a casting machine (). The casting machine () includes a pair of casting rollers and a nozzle arranged to deliver liquid metal into a nip between the casting rollers, such that the metal solidifies as it passes through the nip. The heating unit () is located between the furnace and the casting machine, and is thermostatically controlled to heat the liquid metal to a second liquid metal temperature.

A control pin for controlling the flow of liquid metal in a casting process includes an elongate body member, the body member being made at least partially of a composite ceramic material that includes a fibrous reinforcing material embedded within a ceramic matrix, and a failsafe element embedded within the composite ceramic material.

A casting ladle has a body () with a base () and walls () made of a laminated composite ceramic material that includes multiple layers of a woven fiber reinforcing fabric embedded in a ceramic matrix. A rigid support element () for attaching the ladle to a handling device is embedded within the composite ceramic material. In a preferred form, the reinforcing fabric is made of woven glass and the matrix material includes calcium silicate and silica.

A control pin () for controlling the flow of liquid metal in a casting process includes an elongate body member (), the body member being made at least partially of a composite ceramic material that includes a fibrous reinforcing material embedded within a ceramic matrix. The body member () is preferably hollow and includes a wear-resistant tip () at one end.
