An optical disc structure for playback by a read-out device is described. The optical disc structure includes a first layer with first content recorded thereon. A second layer is coupled to the first layer. The second layer has first content and second content recorded thereon. The disc of the present principles makes use of the fact that a less than full capacity DVD9 disc leaves available recording space after the end of program area and required lead-out area on the second of the two data layers of a DVD9 disc.

An optical disc for data storage includes a layer of color-shifting material. Light passing through the color-shifting layer will have a color determined by the various constructive and destructive interference of the various wavelengths after they have passed through the material, diffracted while passing through the material, and are reflected off of various portions of the material, resulting in a color change when the viewing angle is changed. Additionally, an optical variable device may be defined within the disc, and may include the color-shifting layer.

Wavelength selective coatings for optical disc security

The present invention provides an informational article on which variable information is inserted. The informational article includes a substrate having a zone for inserting the variable information. A visual security device, such as an optically variable ink, a special film, or combinations thereof is disposed in the zone on the substrate. The visual security device is sized and arranged such that at least a portion of the variable information is adapted to being inserted over the visual security device.
