Embodiments of the invention provide an impact modified composition comprising ethylene/&#x3b1;-olefin interpolymers. The ethylene/&#x3b1;-olefin interpolymers are characterized by an average block index, ABI, which is greater than zero and up to about 1.0 and a molecular weight distribution, M/M, greater than about 1.3. In addition or alternatively, the block ethylene/&#x3b1;-olefin interpolymer is characterized by having at least one fraction obtained by Temperature Rising Elution Fractionation ('TREF'), wherein the fraction has a block index greater than about 0.3 and up to about 1.0 and the ethylene/&#x3b1;-olefin interpolymer has a molecular weight distribution, M/M, greater than about 1.4.

The instant invention is an impact modifier composition and method of producing the same. The impact modifier composition comprises (a) less than 30 percent by weight of high-density polyethylene, based on the weight of the impact modifier composition; and (b) at least 70 percent by weight of chlorinated polyethylene, based on the weight of the impact modifier composition.

Impact modifier composition, an impact resistant composition, method of producing the same, and articles made therefrom

The instant invention is an impact resistant composition, method of producing the same, and articles made therefrom. The impact resistant composition comprises (1) at least 85 percent by weight of poly(vinyl chloride), based on the weight of the impact resistant composition; and (2) less than 10 percent by weight of an impact modifier composition, based on the weight of the impact resistant composition, comprising; (a) less than 30 percent by weight of high-density polyethylene, based on the weight of the impact modifier composition; and (b) at least 70 percent by weight of chlorinated polyethylene, based on the weight of the impact modifier composition; wherein the impact resistant composition has an instrumented dart drop impact of greater than 0.90 inch-pounds per mil at &#x2212;10&#xb0; C. The method for producing the impact resistant composition comprises the steps of (1) selecting poly(vinyl chloride); (2) selecting an impact modifier composition comprising; (a) less than 30 percent by weight of high-density polyethylene, based on the weight of the impact modifier composition; and (b) at least 70 percent by weight of chlorinated polyethylene, based on the weight of the impact modifier composition; (3) melt blending the poly(vinyl chloride) and the impact modifier composition; and (4) thereby producing the impact resistant composition comprising at least 85 percent by weight of poly(vinyl chloride), based on the weight of the impact resistant composition; and (2) less than 10 percent by weight of the impact modifier composition.

The invention provides a chlorinated ethylene-based polymer, process for preparing the same, and compositions and articles prepared from the same. The chlorinated ethylene-based polymer has a low residual crystallinity, for example, less than 8 percent, a relatively high crystallization temperature, Tc, for example greater than, or equal to, 25&#xb0; C., and a medium weight average molecular weight, Mw, for example, less than, or equal to, 325,000 g/mole.

The instant invention is an impact resistant rigid vinyl chloride polymer composition, and method of making the same. The impact resistant rigid vinyl chloride polymer composition, according to instant invention, includes a vinyl chloride polymer, an impact modifier, and a lubricant system. The impact modifier includes a chlorinated olefin polymer, and an ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymer. The lubricant system includes a first component, a second component, and a third component. The first component is a carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of stearic acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, blends thereof, and combinations thereof. The second component is a hydrocarbon wax selected from the group consisting of a paraffin wax, polyolefin wax, blends thereof, and combinations thereof. The third component is a metal soap selected from the group consisting of calcium stearate, aluminum stearate, copper stearate, lithium stearate, magnesium stearate, sodium stearate, zinc stearate, blends thereof, and combinations thereof. The process for preparing the impact resistant rigid vinyl chloride polymer composition of the instant invention includes the following steps: (1) providing a vinyl chloride polymer; (2) providing an impact modifier as described above; (3) providing a lubricant system as described above; (4) blending the vinyl chloride polymer, the impact modifier, and the lubricant system thereby forming the impact resistant rigid vinyl chloride polymer composition.

Impact resistant rigid vinyl chloride polymer composition and method of making the same

Chlorinated olefin polymers prepared from olefin polymer base resins having Ivalues of 0.05-0.8 dg/minute act as impact modifiers for vinyl chloride polymers under low to ambient temperature conditions. When vinyl chloride polymers are mixed with a preferred class of the chlorinated polymers, having chlorine contents of 20-30 percent by weight, compositions that exhibit short fusion times and low fusion temperatures are produced.

The present invention is specifically directed to improved polyvinyl chloride compositions having excellent impact strength. In particular, the impact resistant composition comprises a) a vinyl chloride polymer, b) at least one ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymer, said copolymer having a density of 0.858 to 0.91 g/cc and having a melt index from an I value of 0.1 to an I value of 10, and c) at least one randomly chlorinated olefin polymer having a chlorine content of from 20-40 percent by weight, the feedstock for said chlorinated olefin polymer having a melt index from an I value of 0.1 to an I value of 10. Optionally, these impact resistant polyvinyl chloride compositions may have inorganic filler levels from 5 to 50 parts per hundred relative to the polyvinyl chloride polymer.

Chlorinated and chlorosulfonated polyethylenes are produced by chlorinating substantially linear olefin polymers having a melt flow ratio, I.sub.10 /I.sub.2, .gtoreq.5.63, a molecular weight distribution, M.sub.w /M.sub.n, defined by the equation: M.sub.w /M.sub.n .gtoreq.(I.sub.10 /I.sub.2)-4.63, a critical shear rate at onset of gross melt fracture of at least 50 percent greater than the critical shear rate at the onset of surface melt fracture of a linear olefin polymer having about the same I.sub.2 and Mw/Mn and at least about 0.01 long chain branches/1000 carbons and a molecular weight distribution from about 1.5 to about 2.5 and their method of manufacture are disclosed. The chlorosulfonated polyethylenes are produced by treating the chlorinated polyethylenes with a mixture of gaseous chlorine and sulfur dioxide.
