At telecommunications switches and routers, RED (random early packet discard) uses the queue depth to determine whether to keep or discard each packet as it arrives at a queue. This is done by determining a discard probability (P), which is dependent on the average depth of the queue, and comparing the discard probability to a random number. One way of performing the invention uses the summed discard probabilities, instead of counting the number of packets (count) and multiplying that by the current discard probability, as in the prior art. The resulting sum is compared to the random number for discard operation. The disclosure further describes a more accurate way of calculating average depth of a queue, especially when the queue encounters periods of idleness.

Random early packet discard (RED)

The invention provides a system and method of controlling timing of release of traffic for a communication switch. The traffic originates from at least one source, is directed to a common ingress point of the switch and is directed to a common egress point in the switch. The egress point has a maximum egress transmission rate. The traffic has at least one datastream. Each datastream has a requested transmission rate. The method comprises, for each datastream, establishing a maximum cell release rate such that a sum of each of the maximum cell release rate does not exceed the maximum egress transmission rate and utilizing the maximum cell release rate to govern release of local traffic in the datastream from the ingress point.

System and method for providing gaps between data elements at ingress to a network element

A system and method of translating a set of transmission parameters related to a first transmission protocol from said first transmission protocol to a second transmission protocol for a data element being sent on a connection from a first communication network utilizing the first transmission protocol to a second communication network utilizing the second transmission protocol is provided. The method includes mapping a first parameter from the set of transmission parameters to a class of service value for the connection and mapping the class of service value and a second parameter from the set of transmission parameters to another parameter for the second transmission protocol.

A system and method of reassembling packets from traffic flows in a network element is provided. Each of the packets has at least one data part. The method includes the steps (1) queuing each of the data parts of the packets of traffic flows in a single reassembly queue in a sorted order, the data parts of each of the packets being continuously grouped without data parts of another packet being interleaved therein and (2) reassembling the data parts of each of the packets queued in the single reassembly queue.

System and method for reassembling packets in a network element

The present invention provides a system and method of mediating cell traffic between an asynchronous transmission mode (ATM) network and an adjacent network, each cell in said cell traffic having a set of transmission parameters related to the ATM network and a respective ATM connection for the cell. In an embodiment the method comprises: (i) identifying for the cell an egress queue family by utilizing a first set of parameters from said set of transmission parameters; (ii) associating with the cell one of a predefined number of egress class of service (COS) levels by mapping a second set of parameters from the set of transmission parameters into one of the egress COS levels; (iii) utilizing the egress COS level associated with the cell to select an egress queue member of the egress queue family identified in step (i), the selected egress queue member being associated with the egress COS level associated with the cell in step (ii); and (iv) providing said cell to said identified queue member for forwarding to said another network.
