This invention relates generally to characterizing bioaerosols and, more particularly, to a system for recovering, quantifying, identifying, and assessing the metabolic activities of bioaerosols based on their major biopolymer profiles (lipids, carbohydrate and protein) and more specific their genetic materials (DNA/RNA), such as airborne viruses, bacteria, fungi and pollens.

Residuals, such as slag particles, from iron- and/or steel-making, and/or water-leached eluates thereof, are added directly to a conventional or multi-staged anaerobic digester or other sewage sludge or biosolid handling process. The slag particles or other residuals sorb, sequester, immobilize, or otherwise promote the removal of phosphorus and/or sulfur from wastewater, sludge, or biosolids being treated, such that the associated aqueous phase concentrations of phosphorus and sulfur are significantly reduced.

A shoe weight for athletic training including a shoe sleeve configured to rest upon the outer surface of a shoe while being worn. A U-shaped member is disposed within the shoe sleeve and designed to exert an inward force against the outer surface of the shoe being worn. A lace clip having an upper portion a lower portion, and a point of inflection is also disposed within the sleeve, such that the lower portion of the lace clip can slide in between the laces and the tongue of the shoe while the point of inflection and the upper portion hook the sleeve to the shoe. The shoe weight further includes a plurality of weights disposed within the shoe sleeve, such that the wearer of the shoe is forced to expend greater energy while walking, running, or performing any act involving movement of the foot inserted in the shoe being worn.

A metal removal system and method are disclosed. An example method includes providing a sorptive media and providing a primary ligand having an affinity for the sorptive media, the primary ligand being an amphipathic, heterocyclic metal-coordinating compound. The method also includes providing a co-ligand having an affinity for the sorptive media. During a treatment process, a metal removal response is observed to be non-proportional between expected metal removal ability based on individual metal coordination abilities of the media alone and of all ligands, and actual net metal removal capacity resulting from a heterogeneous cooperation of the primary ligand and the sorptive media and activated by the co-ligand.

The present invention provides concrete-containing compositions, and methods of making and using the same, that allow for the prevention of microbially induced corrosion in concrete. In certain embodiments, the concrete-containing compositions comprise a cementitious substrate, and a formulation of heavy metal-laden, carbon-based sorbent.

Delivery of heavy metals for the inhibition of microbially induced concrete corrosion

Removing metals from metal containing acidic solutions, such as contaminated waters and industrial wastewaters, is described. An amphipathic, heterocyclic, metal-coordinating compound (an extraordinaiy ligand) and a sorbent are added to a solution, such that the addition, at a specific acidic pH of the solution, causes at least some of the metal-coordinating compound to bind with some of the metal cations and at least some of the metal-coordinating compound sorbs to the sorbent, along with any metal cations bound therewith. The compound and the sorbent may be added to the solution, either together or independently, so that the compound may bind the metal. The metal binding compound may be a benzotriazole, a benzothiazole, or another compound to bind a metal. The sorbent is selected to interact with the metal-coordinating compound in sequestering the metal from solution as part of a complexation. Thereafter, the ligand-metal complex may be removed from the solution.
