A wave front control system ('WFCS') organizes the object scene into a mosaic comprised of a grid of segments and transmits each segment in a temporal sequence. The WFCS steers the light fronts emanating from each segment, one segment at a time, through a series of optical components that transmit the light fronts respectively emanating from each segment onto a digital imaging sensor. An optical recording device records each sensed segment, and the object scene is composed by assembling the recorded segments. Optical frequency doubling apparatus is disclosed having a system output portion and a source of coherent radiation together with a plurality of discreet nonlinear light transmissive devices positioned in series between the source of coherent radiation and the system output portion, and further including a phase shifter positioned in series with the nonlinear light transmissive devices for altering the phase of light wavefronts passing therethrough. A harmonic beamsplitter is used to separate the frequency doubled output from the coherent light inputted into the system by the source of coherent radiation.

Phased cascading of multiple nonlinear optical elements for frequency

A method is disclosed for establishing an optical link between two lasers via an optical fiber by directing the output from one laser through an optical fiber and into a second laser and vice vera. Before insertion into the lasers, the output from the respective fibers is phase conjugated in a double phase conjugate mirror. Thus, the disclosed method and apparatus provide a combination of fiber optics, used to transport the light from the lasers, and optical phase conjugation, used to compensate for fiber-induced distortions.

Coherent transfer of laser energy between laser fields with high efficiency (85-95%) is obtained by energy coupling of nearly copropagating (intersecting) laser beams in mono-atomic vapor and provides an output beam of high power when nearly equal energy pulses are tuned near resonance with the transition of the atom of the vapor (e.g., potassium vapor at 230.degree.-260.degree. C.). The frequencies of the beams differ by approximately the inverse of the excited state lifetime of the atoms for optimum combining (coupling efficiency).
