Inflatable orthopedic implants and related methods are disclosed herein, e.g., for deploying such implants within an intervertebral space for use in spinal fusion surgery, other intervertebral surgical procedures, or other surgical procedures. The inflatable intervertebral implant can include a hollow inflatable body that can be configured in a compact state for insertion into a target intervertebral space between a pair of adjacent vertebral bodies. Once the vertebral bodies are separated or distracted, e.g., using one or more inflatable distractors, the hollow body of the inflatable implant can be inflated with bone cement or other curable material. When the curable material hardens, the inflated implant can form a rigid intervertebral support structure (e.g., a fusion cage) capable of maintaining the vertebral distraction and thereby enabling removal of the distractors.

Inflatable non-distracting intervertebral implants and related methods

A drug-impregnated sleeve for encasing a medical implant is provided. In one embodiment, the sleeve may include a body made of a biologically-compatible material that defines an internal cavity configured to receive the medical implant. In one embodiment, the biologically-compatible material is bioresorbable. The body may include a plurality of apertures, such as perforations or holes, extending from the cavity through the body. The sleeve may further include a first end, a second end, and a drug impregnated into the resorbable sheet. In one possible embodiment, the first end of the sleeve may be open for receiving the medical implant therethrough and the second end may be closed. The implant may be encased in the sleeve and implanted into a patient from which the drug is dispensed in vivo over time to tissue surrounding the implantation site. In one embodiment, the body is made from at least one sheet of a biologically-compatible material.

Drug-impregnated encasement

The present disclosure is directed to a bioresorbable ceramic composition having a plurality of biocompatible ceramic granules, each of the granules having a coating of a plurality of calcium containing particles, where at least a portion of the particles are bound to at least a portion of an outer surface of each of the granules, and further where the composition is flowable in a dry state. The present disclosure is also directed to a three dimensional scaffold for bone repair that includes the bioresorbable composition, which upon implantation to a locus of repair defines an interconnected pore network between outer walls of the coated granules of the composition. Finally, the present disclosure is directed to methods of forming both the bioresorbable ceramic composition and the three-dimensional ceramic scaffold.

A drug-impregnated sleeve for encasing a medical implant is provided. In one embodiment, the sleeve may include a body made of a biologically-compatible material that defines an internal cavity configured to receive the medical implant. In one embodiment, the biologically-compatible material is bioresorbable. The body may include a plurality of apertures, such as perforations or holes, extending from the cavity through the body. The sleeve may further include a first end, a second end, and a drug impregnated into the resorbable sheet. In one possible embodiment, the first end of the sleeve may be open for receiving the medical implant therethrough and the second end may be closed. The implant may be encased in the sleeve and implanted into a patient from which the drug is dispensed in vivo over time to tissue surrounding the implantation site. In one embodiment, the body is made from at least one sheet of a biologically-compatible material, hi one embodiment, the sleeve may be made in least in part from caprolactone to add stretchability to the sleeve.

The present invention relates in general to implantable compositions, and method for preparing same, containing a calcium salt-containing component, optionally demineralized bone, a plurality of discrete fibers, optionally a flow additive, and optionally continuous reinforcing fibers or an array of organized fibers in the form of mesh. Advantageously, the discrete fibers have a specific aspect ratio (length/diameter) from about 50:1 to about 1000:1. The addition of a small amount of discrete fibers and/or the continuous reinforcing fibers or fiber mesh can cause drastic increases in certain mechanical properties including flexural strength, flexural toughness, and/or screw pullout strength.

Bone cement compositions having fiber-reinforcement and/or increased flowability

The invention relates to a syringe for delivery of a bone substitute material. The syringe includes a barrel for holding the material, a plunger receivable within the barrel and having a threaded portion, and an engagement member including a threaded throughbore positioned coaxial with the barrel. The threaded portion of the plunger is movable through the threaded throughbore barrel by pushing the plunger in the axial direction, and by rotating the plunger. The invention also relates to a method of expelling material from a syringe.

Threaded syringe for delivery of a bone substitute material

Carbonated hydroxyapatite compositions and their preparation are described. The compositions are biologically resorbable and are prepared as flowable masses which can be administered by syringe to set in situ to serve as a support structure, filler, prosthesis or the like. Optionally the compositions may include proteins or serve as a depot for compositions of pharmacological interest.

Paste compositions capable of setting into carbonated apatite

Two component, storage stable apatitic cement compositions, as well as methods for their production, are provided. The dry component of subject apatitic cements comprises basic calcium source particles at least partially coated with a partially neutralized acidic calcium phosphate. The dry component of subject compositions is prepared by combining basic calcium source particles with dissolved acidic phosphate in at least a partially aqueous medium, whereby the basic calcium source particles become partially coated with a partially neutralized acidic calcium phosphate. The reaction is terminated prior to completion of the reaction between the acidic phosphate and the basic calcium source by removing the available water from the reaction mixture. In a first mode, the subject cement may be produced by mechanically mixing an acidic phosphate source with basic calcium source particles in the presence of an aqueous solvent and stopping the reaction between the acid and base prior to completion. Alternatively, a phosphoric acid solution may be rapidly combined with a basic calcium phosphate particle slurry such that partially neutralized acidic calcium phosphate precipitates on the surface of the basic calcium phosphate particles.

Storage stable calcium phosphate cements

Setting times of calcium phosphate cement compositions are enhanced by the addition of phosphate or carbonate lubricant compositions. Methods for preparing the cement compositions are provided.

Kits for preparing calcium phosphate minerals

A flowable, paste-like composition capable of setting in a clinically relevant period of time into an antimicrobial agent loaded apatitic product having sufficient compressive strength to serve as a cancellous bone structural material is provided. The subject compositions are prepared by combining dry ingredients with a physiologically acceptable lubricant and an antimicrobial agent, where the dry ingredients comprise at least two different calcium phosphates. The subject compositions find use in a variety of different applications, including orthopaedic, dental and cranio-maxillofacial applications.

Methods for producing a room temperature stable, phase pure .alpha.-C.sub.3 P product, and compositions derived therefrom, are provided. In the subject method, a tricalcium phosphate source is heated to a temperature sufficient to convert substantially all of said tricalcium phosphate source to a substantially phase pure .alpha.-C.sub.3 P product. The temperature of the resultant product is rapidly cooled to a temperature below about 700.degree. C., resulting in a room temperature stable, reactive .alpha.-C.sub.3 P product. The resultant .alpha.-C.sub.3 P product may be milled to provide an .alpha.-C.sub.3 P composition which may find use in the preparation of calcium phosphate cements.
