Methods, systems and apparatuses may provide for technology that includes a system on chip (SoC) having a root of trust and an embedded controller to conduct functional safety operations and non-functional safety operations with respect to the SoC. The technology may also include an enhanced serial peripheral interface (eSPI) coupled to the SoC and the embedded controller, wherein the eSPI is to tunnel communications associated with the functional safety operations between the embedded controller and the root of trust.

A network device automatically detects the best protocol a network will support. The network device includes a driver for transmitting data, a receiver for receiving data, and a port operationally coupled to the driver and receiver. The network device further includes negotiation logic coupled to the driver and receiver for selecting a protocol in coordination with other network devices. The network device further includes error detection logic and backs down to a lower transmission rate if errors are detected after the initial negotiation of the selected protocol.

A method and apparatus for transferring data traffic, such as in a SONET/SDH environment, is provided. Two designs are presented, each utilizing a dual device design, where one device performs GFP Framing and the other device performs GFP-T adaptation. The method and apparatus include a first device having a first device FIFO, the first device configured to receive data and assemble data into packets and transfer data across a packet interface when the first device FIFO contains more than N bytes. A second device comprises a second device FIFO, the second device configured to receive data packets from the packet interface and utilize a plurality of thresholds to maintain a quantity of data in the second device FIFO within a predetermined range. Depending on the design employed, control codes, such as 65B_PAD control codes, may be added in the first device under certain conditions to facilitate data transfer.

An apparatus and method for automatically detecting the port type of a remote device are disclosed. One embodiment of the apparatus includes a data rate detection unit to sample a data rate from an incoming data signal. A first frequency configuration unit is operatively coupled with the data rate detection unit to receive a detected data rate from the data rate detection unit. The apparatus also includes an oscillator to generate a plurality of reference clock frequencies. A frequency selector unit is coupled with the oscillator to select one of the reference clock frequencies. A phase lock unit to phase lock the incoming data signal is coupled with the first frequency configuration unit. A data rate select output is coupled with the first frequency configuration unit to operatively link the first frequency configuration unit with a second frequency configuration unit of a remote device.

A visual indicator array has (M&times;N)/2 pairs of indicator devices arranged in a two-dimensional, linear array having M rows and N columns, where M is an integer greater than or equal to two, and N is an integer greater than or equal to one. The array also includes M/2 enable lines, each of which is connected to all of the indicator devices in two of the M rows to deliver enable signals to the indicator devices in the two rows. Likewise, each of N status lines is connected to all of the indicator devices in one of the N columns. Status information is carried by M&times;N status signals, and each of N selectors is connected to a corresponding one of the status lines. Each of the N selectors receives M of the status signals and selectively applies the M status signals to the corresponding status line one at a time.

The repeater includes a first repeater logic for connecting devices operating at the first rate to a first backplane, a second repeater logic for connecting devices operating at the second rate to a second backplane, and a port switching fabric, coupled to the first and second repeater logic, for determining the transmission rate of a signal at a port and routing the signal to one of the repeater logic according to the transmission rate determination. The repeater includes a serial controller for accessing internal management counters, LEDs for providing status information about the repeater and a media access controller for controlling functions including the transmission loopback and reception of Ethernet frames.

A 200 Mbps PHY/MAC combination for providing full duplex operation at 400 Mbps is disclosed. The PHY/MAC uses all 4 pairs of wire to create a single channel. A transmit and receive port of a physical layer device is connected to a first end of four pairs of category 5 wiring. A media access control entity sources PLS primitives to manage the flow of frames eight bits a nibble to and from the four pairs of category 5 wiring through the physical layer device. A switch is provided for trunking the four pair of category 5 wiring into a single channel comprising separate 200 Mbps throughput transmit and receive data paths to the physical layer device or into two channels comprising separate 100 Mbps throughput transmit and receive data paths to the physical layer device comprising separate 100 Mbps throughput transmit and receive data paths to the physical layer device. The medium independent interface includes means for providing an eight bit wide transmit data path from the media access control entity to the T2 physical layer device, means for providing an eight bit wide receive data path from the physical layer device to the media access control entity and means for mapping PLS primitives from the media access control entity to the eight bit wide transmit and receive data paths. The eight bit wide transmit and receive data paths of the media independent interface are clocked at 25 MHz, thereby each providing a 200 Mbps data path between the medium access control layer and the physical layer device.

200 Mbps PHY/MAC apparatus and method

A PHY having a media independent interface (MII) providing connections to a MAC or to another PHY is disclosed. The invention provides a mechanism for connecting a first PHY with a second PHY, wherein the PHY may act as the media access control side of the MII. The system includes a selection means for selecting the mode of operation for the PHY, a MII for providing a synchronous digital interface carrying un-encoded data over separate transmit and receive paths and a translation entity for generating output enables for controlling the flow of the data, wherein the translation entity establishes in response to mode being selected a first flow of data for connecting the PHY to a Media Access Control entity or a second flow of data for connecting the PHY to a second PHY. The translation entity muxes data and control signals based upon the mode selection. A translation synchronization entity is provided. The synchronization entity may includes a 10 Mbps synchronization entity and/or a 100 Mbps synchronization entity. The MII receives a transmit and receive clock from a second PHY when the PHY is connected to a second PHY, and the translation synchronization entity synchronizes the internal clocks and the MII transmit and receive clocks. An interface to a 10 or 100 Mbps repeater entity is provided wherein the interface maps a transmit data path from the translation entity to the repeater entity and receive data paths from the repeater entity to the translation entity.
