An illustrative example elevator control system includes a plurality of sway sensors situated within a hoistway of the building. The sway sensors respectively include a contact surface situated to be contacted by a vertically extending elongated member of an elevator when the elongated member moves laterally in the hoistway. The sway sensors respectively provide an indication of contact between the contact surface and the elongated member. A controller receives an indication of building movement and the indications from the sway sensors. The controller determines whether at least one condition exists in the hoistway based on the indications and implements an adjustment to elevator movement control when the at least one condition exists.

Elevator system control based on building and rope sway

A belt for suspending and/or driving an elevator car extending longitudinally along a length of the belt. An inner belt layer formed from a first material is bonded to the plurality of tension elements at a first side of the belt. The inner belt layer forms an inner belt surface interactive with a traction sheave of an elevator system. An outer belt layer formed from a second material is bonded to the plurality of tension elements at a second side of the belt. The plurality of tension elements are located between the first side and the second side.

A method of fault detection of a belt or rope includes interconnecting a plurality of cords of the belt or rope, the cords including a plurality of wires, to form a bridge circuit. A fault detection bridge circuit is subjected to a voltage excitation and outputs a voltage which is indicative of the belt or rope damage but remaining insensitive to other environmental noises.

Elevator cord health monitoring

A device for inhibiting the closing of a door that controls entry of an enclosure includes a first magnet disposed on a driven portion of the device and a second magnet disposed on a fixed portion of the enclosure. The first magnet and the second magnet are configured to be in register with each other as the door moves toward a closed position such that if the first magnet and the second magnet are in register with each other, a pole of the first magnet is in close proximity of a pole of the second magnet such that the first magnet and the second magnet react to each other to inhibit motion of the door towards the closed position.

Braking device for a door operator

A method of fault detection of a belt or rope includes connecting a fault detection unit to at least a portion of a belt or rope including a plurality of wires arranged in a plurality of strands and/or cords. At least the portion of the belt or rope is subjected to an AC voltage of high frequency range and an electrical impedance of the portion of the belt or rope is measured via the fault detection unit. Using at least the measured electrical impedance of the portion of the belt or rope, a fault condition of the belt or rope is determined.

A belt for suspending and/or driving an elevator car includes a plurality of wires arranged into a plurality of cords. The plurality of cords includes one or more inner cords located at an innermost portion of the belt relative to a lateral end of the belt and one or more outer cords located laterally outboard of the one or more inner cords. The one or more outer cords have a construction distinct from the one or more inner cords. A jacket substantially retains the plurality of cords.

Elevator system belt

An exemplary elevator door frame includes a sill member and a header member. A plurality of jamb members are generally perpendicular to the sill member and the header member. A plurality of guide rail brackets are supported on at least one of the sill member, the header member or one of the jamb members. The guide rail brackets are configured to receive a portion of a guide rail.

An elevator load bearing assembly () includes a jacket () having different portions comprising different polymer compositions. In a disclosed example, a plurality of tension members () are at least partially surrounded by a first portion () comprising a first polymer composition. A second portion () establishes at least one exterior surface () of the jacket () and comprises a second polymer composition. In one example, a surface-modifying agent is added to alter the composition of at least a portion of the jacket (). In another example, co-extrusion techniques using different polymer compositions establish different portions of the jacket ().

An elevator sheave () includes a belt guiding surface () having a surface profile along at least a portion of the belt guiding surface. The surface profile preferably is defined by an norder polynomial equation where n is a number greater than 2. In one example, the reference point () is a central point along the width of the belt guiding surface (). In one example, a central portion () of the surface profile preferably is aligned to be generally parallel with the central axis () of the sheave body. Some examples have curvilinear side portions () between the central portion () and the edges () of the sheave. Other examples also include second side portions () that have linear profiles.

Sheave for use in an elevator system

An illustrative method of making a load bearing member for use in an elevator system includes mechanically roughening at least one surface on an exterior of a jacket of the load bearing member to establish a friction characteristic that facilitates engagement between an elevator system sheave and the roughened surface.

An elevator load bearing member assembly includes at least one roughened surface () on a polyurethane jacket (). In one example, mechanical roughening is used to roughen the surface () after the jacket has been extruded onto tension members (). In another example, the temperatures used for molding a jacket () are controlled to induce melt fracture and roughen the surface () during the forming process. Other examples include chemically roughening the jacket surface and using localized heating to roughen the surface. The roughened jacket surface improves friction characteristics of a load bearing member assembly.

A power system () operates a plurality of hoist motors (), each of which controls movement of one of a plurality of elevators (). The power system () includes a power bus () and a converter () connected across the power bus () for converting alternating current (AC) power from an AC power source () to direct current (DC) power and delivering the DC power to the power bus (). The power system () also includes a plurality of inverters () connected across the power bus (). Each inverter () is connected to a hoist motor () and is operable to drive the hoist motor () when the hoist motor () is motoring by converting the DC power from the power bus () into AC power. Each inverter () is further operable to convert AC power produced by the hoist motor () when the motor is generating to DC power and to deliver the DC power to the power bus (). A controller () manages power on the power bus () by controlling operation of the converter () and the inverters () to drive a motoring hoist motor with power delivered to the power bus () by the converter () and generating hoist motors.

Elevator power system

An elevator load bearing member assembly includes at least one traction enhancing surface () on a jacket (). In one example, a mechanical removal process is used to strip away at least some of an amide-rich layer from the surface () after the jacket has been extruded onto tension members (). In another example, a chemical removal process is used. Another disclosed example includes disrupting the surface.
