Low resistance ground joints for dual stage actuation disk drive suspensions

A method of joining, e.g., by fusion welding, titanium, and titanium-based alloys to ferrous metals, and the intermetallic weld pool created by practice of the method is described. The instant invention involves the use, inclusion or deployment of tantalum into the weld pool and upon cooling a weld, to create a surprisingly strong intermetallic bond, weld, or joint.

Method of joining titanium and titanium-based alloys to ferrous metals using tantalum

Stable, low resistance conductive adhesive ground connections between motor contacts and a gold-plated contact area on a stainless steel component of a dual stage actuated suspension. The stainless steel component can be a baseplate, load beam, hinge, motor plate, add-on feature or flexure.

An optical structure for combining light from a plurality of individual optical fibers into a single optical transmission device. The structure can be incorporated into the optical probe of a spectrophotometric instrument and includes a plurality of optical send fibers having input and output ends and an optical light mixer having input and output ends. The output ends of the send fibers are secured in optical communication with the input end of the light mixer.

Fiber optic light mixer

A disposable tip adapted for use in connection with an optical probe of an instrument. The tip includes a one-piece molded elastomeric base member having a boot and an opaque tissue-engaging surface. The boot releasably mates with and provides an interference/friction fit to the probe. The tissue-engaging surface surrounds and extends from the boot. A window in the base member extends into the boot to transmit light between the probe and tissue. A layer of optically transparent material covers the window on the tissue-engaging surface. Adhesive on the tissue-engaging surface of the base member releasably secures the probe to the tissue being analyzed.

Disposable tissue probe tip

A spectrophotometric instrument including light signal sources, a detector, a processor/controller, a probe and a calibration device. The light signal sources include a source of measurement light signals having measurement light wavelengths and a source of a calibration light signal at a calibration detection wavelength which is different than the measurement light wavelengths. The probe has one or more send fibers coupled to the measurement and calibration light signal sources for transmitting the measurement light signals and the calibration light signal into tissue, and one or more receive fibers for receiving light including the measurement light signals and the calibration light signal. The calibration device is adapted to receive the probe and has an optical filter for transmitting the measurement light signals but not the calibration light signal. The detector is coupled to the receive fibers to generate electrical signals representative of the light received at the receive fibers. The processor/controller is coupled to the detector and initiates a calibration procedure when the calibration light signal is not detected.

Calibration mode recognition and calibration algorithm for spectrophotometric instrument

An optical connector latch to optically couple at least one optical fiber ferrule on an interface housing with an optics receptacle mount on an instrument and a method of using the same. The optical connector latch comprises one or more shell pegs adapted to advance the interface housing into engagement with the optics receptacle mount. One or more ferrule pins are adapted to extend through latch holes in the interface housing and latch holes in the optics receptacle mount to engage with the optical fiber ferrule. A drive mechanism is provided to drive the shell pegs and the ferrule pins toward the optics receptacle mount.

Optical connector latching mechanism for a spectrophotometric instrument

A spectrophotometric instrument including a source of measurement light signals having measurement light wavelengths, and a probe having a tissue-engaging surface, a plurality of send fibers coupled to the measurement light signal source for transmitting the measurement light signals to the tissue-engaging surface, and a plurality of receive fibers for receiving light including the measurement light signals after the measurement light has been transmitted through the tissue. The instrument also has reference signal optics coupled to the measurement light signal between the measurement light signal source and the tissue-engaging surface for transmitting a reference light signal portion of the measurement light signal, a detector for generating electrical signals representative of the measurement light signals and the reference light signals, optical paths for coupling the measurement light signal from the receive fibers and the reference light signal portion from the reference signal optics to the detector, and an optical path control for selectively allowing either the measurement light signal portion or the reference light signal portion to the detector. The optical path control enables the detector to output a reference light sample value when the reference light signal portion is coupled to the detector, and to output a measurement light sample value when the measurement light signal portion is coupled to the detector.

Signal acquisition and processing system for reduced output signal drift in a spectrophotometric instrument

A method for adjusting the load of a head suspension for supporting a read/write head over a disk in a magnetic disk drive. The suspension includes a load beam having a rigid region and proximal and distal ends, with a base on the proximal end and a flexure on the distal end. A spring region is located between the base and rigid region of the load beam. The spring region includes a pair of arms which extend between the base and rigid region to form a cutout, and a plurality of load adjustment frets which extend across the cutout between the base and rigid region. One or more of the frets can be severed by a laser beam to lower the gram load of the suspension. The gram load of the suspension can be increased by shrinking the frets through exposure to the laser beam. Gram load adjustments can be made with the suspensions in a disk stack assembly by directing the laser beam to the frets through an optical fiber.

Method for adjusting head suspension load

A head suspension for supporting a read/write head over a disk in a magnetic disk drive. The suspension includes a load beam having a rigid region and proximal and distal ends, with a base on the proximal end and a flexure on the distal end. A spring region is located between the base and rigid region of the load beam. The spring region includes a pair of arms which extend between the base and rigid region to form a cutout, and a plurality of load adjustment frets which extend across the cutout between the base and rigid region. One or more of the frets can be severed by a laser beam to lower the gram load of the suspension. The gram load of the suspension can be increased by shrinking the frets through exposure to the laser beam. Gram load adjustments can be made with the suspensions in a disk stack assembly by directing the laser beam to the frets through an optical fiber.

In-stack adjustable magnetic head suspension

A measurement system and method for measuring a relative concentration of a first form of a chromophore having a first form and a second form. The method comprises irradiating a tissue sample with light at a plurality of wavelengths within a wavelength range within which the first and second forms of the chromophore provide an overlapping spectral response. A detector is provided that detects spectral data emitted from the tissue. Furthermore, the method comprises determining a first and a second 2d derivative spectrum value, at first and second wavelengths, respectively, within said wavelength range at which the first 2d derivative spectrum value varies with the relative concentration of the first form of the chromophore. A scaled, 2d derivative spectrum value is derived from the first and second 2d derivative spectrum values. A memory stores a correlation which provides the relative chromophore concentration as a function of the scaled, 2d derivative spectrum value. Finally, the relative concentration of the first form of the chromophore in the tissue sample is determined from the 2d derivative spectrum values and the correlation.
