A remote sensing system includes a transmitter for transmitting an online signal and first and second offline signals toward a target. A receiver receives a returned online signal and first and second returned offline signals from the target. A processor is provided for determining (a) a first ratio based on the returned online signal and first offline signal, and (b) a second ratio based on the returned online signal and second offline signal. A filter is also provided for correlating the first ratio with the second ratio for determining whether the returned online, first offline and/or second offline signals are useable. The returned online, first offline and second offline signals are used to compute first and second concentration path lengths (CPLs) of a column of air between a target and the remote sensing platform.

A diode-pumped solid state pulsed laser includes an intracavity nonlinear crystal for wavelength conversion by difference frequency mixing and a secondary resonant cavity containing an additional nonlinear crystal for parametric amplification. Primary and secondary cavities are capable of injection seeding and wavelength stabilization resulting in a very narrow, stable, and well defined spectral output. The combination of pump diode pulsing, the implementation of the intracavity parametric oscillator and parametric amplifier results in very efficient operation. Optical fiber coupled parametric oscillator byproduct light allows simple and non-invasive wavelength diagnostics and monitoring upon connection to an optical spectrum analyzer.

A method of selectively producing a glossy or matte finish to an ink jet printed image by applying a clear protective plastic laminate having a glossy finish to the surface of the image, heating the laminate to soften it and then selectively impressing a surface texture into the soften laminate. Pressing the softened laminate against an endless belt having a textured surface forms the surface texture. The laminate is maintained in contact with the belt for a cooling period so as to permit a cold separation of the laminate from the belt.

An overcoat application apparatus is used to transfer an overcoat material from a donor to a printed media. The overcoat application apparatus in this case includes a donor supply reel, a donor guide bar, a heated fuser guide, a pressure guide, an overcoat application peel apparatus, and a donor take-up reel. The donor supply reel provides a continuous source of donor plus overcoat material. The donor guide bar guides printed media and the donor plus overcoat into a nip created by forcing the heated fuser guide and pressure guide together. The heated fuser guide is used to transport the printed media and laminate carrying donor through the nip and apply heat to the laminate carrying donor and printed media. The pressure guide is used to apply pressure to the fuser guide in order to produce the mechanical nip. The nip plus the heat causes the overcoat material on the donor to be transferred to the printed media. After the fusing process, the peel bar is used to separate the support layer of the laminate carrying donor from the printed media that is now coated with the overcoat material. The overcoat application peel apparatus has three features that aid in the overall ability to perform the separation of the donor layer from the overcoated printed media. These are the first peel guide, the second peel guide and the take-up platen.

Finally, the print sorting station performs the sorting of the prints such that the full bleed durable prints can be returned to customers.

A slow-speed servomechanism includes a motor for driving a load; a direct drive transmission between the motor and the load; an incremental optical encoder connected to the load, the encoder having analog sine and cosine outputs; an analog to digital converter for converting the sine and cosine analog values to digital values; and a digital controller, connected to the motor and the analog to digital converter, for controlling the motor. The digital controller includes an angle decoder responsive to the sine and cosine digital values from the analog to digital converter to produce a relative position count indicating a position within one sine and cosine signal pair, a cycle counter responsive to the relative position count for producing an absolute position count within the operating range of the servomechanism by determining which sine cosine pair is being measured, the angle decoder and cycle counter performing at least four angle decodes within each encoder sine and cosine cycle; a command generator responsive to a user defined desired motion of the load to output a desired count; a phase detector responsive to the absolute position count from the cycle counter and the desired count from the command generator to produce an error signal, and a compensation filter responsive to the error signal for generating a motor driving command.

A media transport system for controlling the position and velocity of media in a document production apparatus marking engine having a media positioning system driven by a motor, includes a motion control loop to control the motor; a sensor adapted to detect the position of the media and to create a trigonometric signal characteristic of the position of the media, the trigonometric signal comprising frequency and phase components; a resolver electronics subsystem adapted to trigonometrically process the trigonometric signal to create a resolved signal; and means for comparing the resolved signal to a reference clock signal of predetermined frequency and phase to provide an error signal used to control the motor that drives the media positioning system. The trigonometric signal may include a sine portion and a cosine portion. The sine portion of the trigonometric signal is sin(.omega..sub.e *t+.phi..sub.e) and the cosine portion of the trigonometric signal is cos(.omega..sub.e *t+.phi..sub.e); where .omega..sub.e is the trigonometric signal frequency component, .phi..sub.e is the trigonometric signal phase component, and t is the time. The resolver electronics subsystem may include a first multiplier adapted to output the product of the sine portion of the trigonometric signal and a reference cosine command cos(.omega..sub.r *t+.phi..sub.r); a second multiplier adapted to output the product of cosine portion of the trigonometric signal and a reference sine command sin(.omega..sub.r *t+.phi..sub.r), where .omega..sub.r is the frequency of the reference command and .phi..sub.r is the phase of the reference command; and means to add the outputs of the first and second multipliers.

Media transport system with high precision position and speed control

A thermal printer is disclosed in which an image is generated on a line-by-line basis with a printhead that is comprised of a plurality of individually activated resistor elements along its length. Uniformity of image intensity is achieved by carefully controlling an ambient temperature of the printing head. This control of ambient temperature is achieved with a cooling fin that is thermally coupled to the printhead. A duct surrounds the cooling fin and air is blown through the duct to transfer heat from the cooling fin. The shapes of the cooling fin and the duct are such that the printhead is maintained at a substantially uniform temperature along its length. A unit cross-sectional area of the duct and a unit surface area of the cooling fin vary along the length of the printhead in a accordance with the expression: Q=unit surface area of cooling fin/unit cross-sectional area of duct=k/L.sup.n, where k is a constant, L is a distance along the length of the printhead an n is a positive exponential power. In a preferred embodiment, n is between about 1.5 and 3.0.
