A heat exchanger apparatus includes a housing that defines a flow passage for a first fluid. The housing has a housing fluid inlet and a housing fluid outlet communicating with the flow passage. A first heat exchanger is located within the flow passage of the housing between the housing fluid inlet and the housing fluid outlet. The first heat exchanger has a plurality of channels for transmitting a second fluid through the first heat exchanger. The heat exchanger apparatus also includes a flow diverter in the flow passage, between the housing fluid inlet and the first heat exchanger, for diverting some of the first fluid to a by-pass region of the flow passage that by-passes the first heat exchanger. As well, a flow control device is in communication with the housing fluid inlet and controls a volume and location of the first fluid entering the flow passage.

A heat exchanger structure for use in a battery unit that comprises a first battery stack comprising a plurality of battery cells and a second battery stack comprising a plurality of battery cells. The heat exchanger structure is disposed between opposing surfaces of the first battery stack and the second battery stack and defines one or more fluid flow passages, the heat exchanger structure being dimensionally compliant to compress under expansion of the first and second battery stacks and expand under subsequent contraction of the first and second battery stacks.

Conformal heat exchanger for battery cell stack

A method for constructing a heat exchanger having a pair of headers and a plurality of tubes extending between and fluidly connecting the headers is described. For each header, a pair of body elements is provided each formed of brazing clad material. A tubular assembly is formed of brazing clad material for each tube. The tubular assembly, for each tube, is fitted into apertures. The body elements and the tubular assemblies are brazed together to form the heat exchanger.

Heat exchanger construction

A by-pass conduit for a stacked plate heat exchanger is disclosed. The by-pass conduit is formed by first and second plate members that each have a substantially planar central portion surrounded by an offset peripheral flange, the peripheral flanges of the first and second plates being sealably joined together and the planar central portions of the first and second plates being in spaced opposition to define a bypass channel. A flow restricting structure provides a fluid restricting barrier in the bypass channel, the flow restricting structure defining a calibrated by-pass passage that regulates the flow of fluid through the bypass channel.

A heat exchanger has a pair of heat exchange conduits having adjacent primary heat exchange surfaces thermally coupled together for the transfer of heat energy between the conduits. A third fluid conduit has a primary heat transfer surface thermally coupled to the primary heat transfer surfaces of the pair of fluid conduits, so that heat can be transferred between any one of the fluid conduits and each of the other fluid conduits.

Multifluid heat exchanger

A plate type heat exchanger having a plurality of stacked plate pairs made up of first and second plates. Each plate pair has opposed manifold members that form respective inlet and outlet manifolds for the flow of a first fluid through a first set of fluid channels formed by the plate pairs. The manifold members space the plate pairs apart to form a second set of transverse flow channels for the flow of a second fluid. A protrusion member is formed at an end portion of the plates and proximal to each of the manifold members and has a mating surface, such that the protrusion members on the second plate of one plate pair align and abut with the protrusion members on the first plate of an adjacent plate pair thereby reinforcing and strengthening the manifold region of the heat exchanger to prevent deformation of the manifold under pressure.

A by-pass valve for a heat exchanger circuit. The by-pass valve includes a housing defining a serially communicating first bore, second bore and third bore substantially aligned along a central axis with a valve seat facing the first bore at a juncture between the first bore and second bore and a spring seat facing the second bore at a juncture between the second bore and third bore, the first bore, second bore and third bore forming at least a portion of a closable flow path between a first opening and a second opening in the housing. An actuator located in the housing has a reciprocating seal disposed for movement along the central axis for engaging the valve seat and closing a valve opening between the first bore and second bore. A coiled return spring is mounted in the housing for urging the reciprocating seal towards the first bore to open the valve opening, the return spring having a first end acting on the reciprocating seal and a second end engaging the spring seat. The second bore and third bore each have a different cross-sectional shape transverse to the central axis.

By-pass valve for heat exchanger

A heat exchanger apparatus is provided wherein a multifluid or at least three-fluid heat exchanger is mounted externally to but in combination with a two-fluid heat exchanger. The multifluid heat exchanger includes three fluid passages or conduits wherein heat energy can be transferred efficiently between at least one of the fluid conduits and each of the other fluid conduits. The multifluid heat exchanger and two fluid heat exchanger are arranged so that the two heat exchangers share a common fluid, the multifluid heat exchanger, therefore, allowing heat transfer to or from the common fluid to the two other fluids in the multifluid heat exchanger thereby improving the overall heat transfer amongst the fluids.

Linked heat exchangers having three fluids

A valve that includes a housing defining first and second bores having a central axis, and a peripheral valve seat. An actuator is located in the first bore and has a reciprocating seal disposed for movement along the central axis for engaging the valve seat and closing the valve. A coiled return spring is mounted in the housing for urging the reciprocating seal towards the chamber to open the valve, the return spring having a first end connected to the reciprocating seal and a second end engaging a spring support in the housing facing the first bore. The return spring may have a larger diameter at its second end than its first end. The housing may include a third bore in communication with the second bore and having a different cross-sectional area than the second bore. The return spring could be supported by a discrete spring support located in one of the bores.

A heat exchanger has at least three tubular conduits spaced apart for the flow of air between and around the conduits. The conduits communicate with inlet and outlet manifolds for the flow of a first liquid through the conduits. An intermediate conduit is located between at least two, but not all, of the spaced-apart tubular conduits, and the intermediate conduit has inlet and outlet openings for the flow of a second liquid through the intermediate conduit.

A valve that includes a housing defining first and second bores having a central axis, and a peripheral valve seat. An actuator is located in the first bore and has a reciprocating seal disposed for movement along the central axis for engaging the valve seat and closing the valve. A coiled return spring is mounted in the housing for urging the reciprocating seal towards the chamber to open the valve, the return spring having a first end connected to the reciprocating seal and a second end engaging a spring support in the housing facing the first bore. The return spring may have a larger diameter at its second end than its first end. The housing may include a third bore in communication with the second bore and having a different cross-sectional area than the second bore. A closure cap formed from moldable material may close an opening in the housing, the closure cap being sealably joined to the housing by a welded joint. The return spring could be supported by a discrete spring support located in one of the bores. The valve seat and an annular sealing member may have corresponding sloping surfaces that cooperate when the sealing member engages the valve seat.

A brazing product for low temperature fluxless brazing comprises a filler metal-forming composition which melts in the range from about 380-575&#xb0; C. The filler metal-forming composition comprises zinc optionally in combination with aluminum and/or silicon, and further comprises at least one braze promoter selected from nickel, cobalt, iron and palladium. The filler metal-forming composition may comprise a single layer or may comprise a number of distinct layers. The brazing product may take the form of a brazing preform or a brazing sheet or casting in which the filler metal-forming composition is deposited on a non-consumable substrate. The substrate may preferably comprise aluminum or an aluminum alloy, but may instead be comprised of one or more metals other than aluminum.

Products for use in low temperature fluxless brazing

A mounting bracket is shown for a heat exchanger core having spaced-apart tubes having peripheral flanges surrounding a manifold. The mounting bracket has a first clip grooved to receive a front edge portion of a selected flange, and a pair of second clips, each grooved to receive, respectively, the back edge portion of an other flange disposed above the selected flange, and a further flange disposed below the selected flange. The clips are joined together by a panel portion adapted for the mounting of the heat exchanger. The clips are tapered to distribute bending stresses therealong.
