This invention relates to methods for soldering metals to superhard man-made materials such as diamond, boron nitride and hexanite and to soldering agents therefore. A method is proposed which comprises applying a metallizing coating to the soldering surface of the materials based on diamond and/or boron nitride, the materials to be joined by soldering being exposed to a temperature sufficient to bring about adequate adhesion of the metallizing coating to the materials to be soldered, and subsequently soldering the metal with the material bearing the metallized coating by use of soldering agents featuring ductile properties and melting points in the range up to 1,000.degree. C, whereby, in accordance with the invention, the metallizing coating is constituted by metals showing high adhesive activity toward materials based on diamond and boron nitride and accounting for from 3.0 to 65 percent by weight of the coating and by metals showing poor oxidizability which account for the balance. The soldering procedure is effected in air under a layer of a liquid flux designed for soldering metals with metallic spelters. Also proposed is a copper-tin-titanium soldering agent which, in accordance with the invention, has the following composition, wt.%:

Method for soldering metals with superhard man-made materials

The herein-proposed alloy is characterized in that it contains apart from such known components as copper, tin, aluminium, cadmium, zinc, titanium, chromium, zirconium, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, cobalt and nickel also vanadium, niobium, tantalum and boron taken either separately or in combination, in an amount of 0.001 to 80 weight percent of the total weight of all the components thereof. The alloy is advantageous in possessing good technological characteristics, being resistant to oxidation at elevated temperatures, featuring good adhesion to all kinds of abrasive materials and giving strong brazing alloys and metallization coatings.

A bond used in the manufacture of abrasive tools containing 3 - 75 wt. -% of copper, 15 - 90 wt.-% of chromium chloride; 0.01 - 10 wt.-% of a metal selected from the group including titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, tungsten; 1 - 30 wt.-% of a low-melting metal; 2 - 30 wt.-% of the metal belonging to the iron subgroup of VIII group of the periodic chart. The employment of the bond according to the invention, for example in the manufacture of drill bits from an abrasive material based on cube boron nitride has made it possible to drill rocks of VIII - IX categories of drilling capacity at a drill speed and bit meterage exceeding 1.5 - 2 times the drill speed and bit meterage that have formerly been attained with the use of drill bits made of diamond with a bond containing tungsten carbide. While drilling rocks of VI - VIII categories of drilling capacity the bits made from cube boron nitride with the bond according to the invention surpass the carbide-faced bits, i.e. bits made by embedding hard-alloy cutting elements into, a steel body by 1.5 times with respect to drill speed and up to 5 - 6 times with respect to bit meterage.
