Traditional home-automation systems utilize a single hub for controlling secondary devices within a home. The techniques described herein, meanwhile, utilize multiple hubs within the environment and/or located remotely from the environment. For instance, an environment may include multiple electronic devices, each configured to control one or more secondary devices within the environment. In addition, a remote service may be configured to control one or more secondary devices within the environment. As such, each controlling device stores and executes an instance of a control engine, rather than relying on a single instance of a control engine located at a single controlling hub.

Interoperability of secondary-device hubs

Described herein are systems and methods providing notifications to an application in a background state on a device such as a user device. The device may be resource constrained such as having limited memory, processor, power, or other resources for execution of applications. While in a background state, notifications from other applications may be sent to the application in the background state. To other applications, the application in the background state may appear to be operating in the foreground.

Delivering notifications to background applications

A processing device determines a usage schedule for a mobile device based on one or more first criteria, the usage schedule comprising a scheduled active period of the mobile device and a scheduled inactive period of the mobile device. The processing device identifies an additional active period for the mobile device that is based on one or more second criteria. The processing device causes the mobile device to transition into a low power state during the scheduled inactive period and to transition out of the low power state during the additional active period prior to the scheduled active period, wherein the mobile device will perform a scheduled operation during the additional active period and prior to the scheduled active period.

Injecting active periods into scheduled inactive periods

Described herein are systems and methods of reducing memory consumption in a device. The device may be resource constrained such as having limited memory, processor, power, or other resources for execution of applications. An application may be transitioned to a background state and at least a portion of the data associated with that application may be compressed, freeing up memory. While in the background state, notifications from other applications may be processed by a notification module on behalf of the application in the background state.
